I try to reinstall shared fax on a sbs 2000, but keep getting a unspecified
error. Does anyone has an idea of fixing this error?
I tried the following:
- Uninstall/remove all & any versions of Windows installer (any i could
find)
- Reboot
- Reinstall the Windows Installer that is located on the Small Business
Server CD2 -located in the Small Business Server CD's Fax directory (CD 2
>Fax\Server).
- Reboot
- Install the MS Fax through the Add/Remove of the Small Business Server
components
Keep getting the same error.
Any help highly appreciated.

Based on my research, there is a known issue regarding the SBS Server 2000
Fax Service:
If you installed a version of Windows Installer that was released after
Windows Installer 2.0, the Small Business Server 2000 Fax Server
installation may stop responding
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/899748
If that is the case, I'd like to provide the following suggestions for your
reference:
Suggestion 1. Uninstall Windows Installer 3.1
1. Click Start and click Run.
2. Key in msiexec and click OK.
3. Please let me know the current version of Windows Installer component.
4. Please open Add/Remove Programs.
5. Check whether Windows Installer 3.1 (or 3.0) has been installed (If you
kept the newest update, it will be installed.).
3. Uninstall it.
4. Reboot the server and follow this KB article to set up the Shared Fax
service:
How to set up the Small Business Server 2000 Shared Fax service
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=325807
Suggestion 2. Manually remove and the install it.
Please follow this KB article to manually remove the fax services and then
install it again.
How to Manually Remove the Small Business Server 2000 Fax Server Component
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315830
Suggestion 3. Check folder permission.
If the problem persists, please check the following folder's permission.
Please modify the permission for C:\Documents and Settings\All Users to
grant Everyone Full Control permission (at least Read and Execute
permission), and Full Control permission for Local System. Then check
whether the problem persists.
If the problem persists, please answer the following questions and collect
appropriate date for me.
1. Is this a new installation or a component reinstallation?
2. Please collect C:\Documents and Setting\Administrator\Local
Settings\Temp\SharedFaxServiceSetupLog.txt file and send it to
v-ed...@microsoft.com for research.
Thanks for your time and cooperation. Please feel free to let me know if
there is anything I can do for you.
Have a nice day!
Best Regards

It seems that you cannot use the Add/Remove utility to remove the Fax
Let's try manually uninstalling the Fax service, please locate the
C:\winnt\$MSI31Uninstall_KB893803v2$\spuninst\ folder, double click the
spuninst application and remove the Fax service.
Note: This folder is a hidden folder, please click Tools->Folder
Options->View, click the Show hidden files and folders option.
After performing the above steps, please refer to my previous reply to see
if the shared fax can be installed successfully.
Thanks for your patience and effort on this case. Please let me know if you
have further concerns.
Have a nice day!
