mail relay problems setting up

I am in the UK, and am having problems getting mail relay to work in a new
installation of SBS 2003 (sp1)
I have internet VPN and pop3 email retrieval all ok
I have set upr SBS 2003 before and have not had this problem.
I'm guessing that it id due to authentication problems.
The smart host server is mail.btconnect.com, I know thst the authorisation
setiings are ok as i can send mail via outlook 'direct' ie not through the
server.
I can see the outbound messages being sent to the smart host server in
message tracking the last lines of which are:
SMTP started outbound Transfer of Message
message transferred to c2btmomr05.btconnect.com through SMTP
I get Delivery Status Notification (Delay) on all emails, but I have had two
delivered over a day late, most never reach the recipient.
I am sure that this is a problem at the smart host end (British Telecom) and
I am in their 'help'systems but after three days, to no avail.
I have never set up smtp with a BT relay, but have with other IPS's with no
problems.
Can you help me find a solution at this end?

I don't know about BT, but I've had problems using some ISP's SMTP servers
for smarthosts....what I've generally done is paid for another company to do
it. www.dyndns.org has MailHop Outbound, and a lot of other companies will
do this. Dealing with BT support is something I would not wish on my worst
enemy.

I understand that you cannot send emails to the other domain through ISP
Smart Host. If I have misunderstood your issue, please let me know.
From the message tracking information, we still cannot make sure that this
issue comes from ISP. So we need to perform some testing to verify it.
Please take your time and perform my following steps:
1> Use DNS to send emails.
1) On the server, go to Start -> Programs -> Microsoft Exchange -> System
Manager.
2) Expand to Yourdomain (Exchange)\Connectors\SmallBusiness SMTP connector.
3) Right click SmallBusiness SMTP connector, go to Properties. General tab.
4) Select Use DNS to route to each address space on this connector.
5) Click OK and test the issue again.
2> Collect SMTP Logging:
a). Open the properties page of the Default SMTP Virtual Server in Exchange
System Manager.
b). On the General tab, check the "Enable logging" box.
c). Click Properties, go to Advanced tab, click the Extended Properties
options and check all the boxes on the list.
d). Click OK twice.
e). Right click Default SMTP Virtual Server, select Stop and restart the
SMTP virtual server.
f). Try sending a message to an external recipient to reproduce the issue.
g). Stop the SMTP virtual server.
h). Go to the C:\WINDOWS\system32\LogFiles\SMTPSVC1 folder and send the
latest two (if there are many) log files to the Newsgroup.
3> I suggest you that contact your ISP to make sure whether the emails have
being delivered to the smart host. If your ISP does receive the emails,
then you need to check with your ISP whether your email domain is on
blacklist or not. You can go to
http://www.spam-blockers.com/SPAM-blacklists.htm to test if your domain or
server is black listed and blocked.
4> If the issue persists, please go to server, Start -> Run "eventvwr"
(without quotation marks), check whether there is any error, if yes, double
click it, click the Copy button and paste the full content to the
Newsgroup.

thanks for all your info - I am working through it!
1) I changed to DNS and message tracking gives:
'Message transferred to mx-b.kundenserver.de through SMTP'
does this mean that it is a probelm at my end?
2) not sure what you mean here - sorry - I can't see what you are 'seeing'
when I do
start -> programs -> Microsoft Exchange -> System -> Servers then right
click the server and select properties general, I have version 6.5 (build
7226.6:service pack 1)
I can 'enable subject logging' and 'display and enable message tracking'. I
also have options for 'this is a front end server' and 'Automatically send
fatal service error information' - both the last two un selected.
I do not have an advanced tab in properties.
Also I don't have a restart or stop option when I right click on the server
(nor on the smtp connector. Am I looking in the wrong place?
3) my ISP is impossible to deal with - they say that they 'do not support'
Microsoft SBS 2003' can you believe that? this is BT - I am still awaiting
replies from my last calls & emails (Friday)
Ther is no black listing that I can see
I will check out the troubleshooting more help much appreciated

I have been working through the troubleshooter and foune the default SMTP
Virtual server as you described.
There was only one log file so far - here it is ( I have copied the file -
is ther a way tp attach it or is this ok?)

I have sent an email using telnet through mail.btconnect.com, I now
understand a little bit more how the commands should look.
I have also created reports from another (successful) server that I have set
up before, and I see that in the log for the server I'm working on now This

Thank you for posting back and you detail information!
From the SMTP log file after you change to use DNS, it seems that of the
most SMTP transactions are successful. Just a double check whether you can
send emails successfully using DNS. You can send me some emails by using
this methord (Use DNS to route to each address space on this connector) for
test.
Also, from the SMTP log, I notice the following error information, please
see:

From the error message, it shows us that your SBS server cannot forward
emails to the smart host due to authentication issue. It seems that your
Smart Host requires transmitting user name and password with messages to
the remote domain. So you need to contact the smart host provider and ask
for the user name, password and the authentication method.
After you got the user name and password, you need to input them on your
Exchange server. To do so, please see:
1. Open Exchange System Manager. Expand to Yourdomain
(Exchange)\Connector\SmallBusiness SMTP Connector.
2. Right click SmallBusiness SMTP Connector, select Properites, go to
Advanced tab.
3. Click Outbound Security.
4. Select Basic Authentication and click Modify.
5. Input the user name and password in the blanks.
6. Click OK three times and test the issue again.
If the smart host really does something special not to support SBS, you can
negotiate with them and consider switching to another ISP or smart host.

By the way, my latest conversation with a guy called Mark at BT
(compl...@btbroadbandoffice.com) was to the effect that BT does not support
SBS 2003 as it is too complicated and BT will not pay for them to be trained
in it! They will support Outlook Express and Outlook only.
Is there someone at Microsoft that I could share this infromation with? I am
sure that this is an untenable position

I have not received your email yet. I have performed a lot of researching
and tests, please see my following information:
1> You mentioned that "see through message tracker that the messages leave
this server and go on", so this might be the receiver's issue if you make
sure that the emails are being sent out.
2> Then we can go to www.dnsstuff.com, do nslookup for your MX record, ping
the MX record to get the IP address and then input the IP address to check
for spam list to see whether your MX record is in a blacklist. The detail
steps are:
a. Go to http://www.dnsstuff.com
b. Use nslookup for coulterwindows.co.uk MX record.
c. You will get the MX Record is ibmr.btconnect.com.
d. Ping ibmr.btconnect.com, you will get the IP address is: [194.73.73.216].
e. Input 194.73.73.216 under Spam database lookup blank, click Lookup, and
you will can check whether your MX record is in blacklist.
f. As for the blacklist you need to contact the blacklist owner to remove
it.
3> We can also use telnet to test email flow to the servers that you cannot
send emails to. You need to use www.dnsstuff.com to get the destination
domain's MX record and then telnet to it. For detail steps please refer to
the following KB article:

I am working on two fronts at the moment
1) I have set in train a move away from BT to a different host - one that I
know to work (I hope it does this time!) with SBS 2003. This will be a better
solution anyway for the webhosting alone so it will work out alright. This
wil take a few days to complete and I will let you know
2) I would like to know what is going on with the DNS route, especially if
there is a blacklist problem, so I will work through your suggestions and let
you know.

Can I jump in here and ask a related question?
I have a very similiar problem to the one described here and have been
following the thread with interest.
My question is that I also use BT for outgoing SMTP and if I use Outlook as
a direct connection I have to set "My Outgoing Server(smtp) Requires
Authentication" in order for it to work. Can you tell me where amd how this
handled by the smtp connector in SBS 2003.

Yes, you can configure this on Exchange Server. Please see my steps:
1. Open Exchange System Manager.
2. Expand to Yourserver (Exchange)\Connector\SmallBusiness SMTP Connector.
3. Right click SmallBusiness SMTP Connector, go to Properties, Advanced
tab, click Outbound Security.
4. Select Basic authentication (Password is sent in clear text). Click
Modify.
5. Input User name and Password. You need to ask BT for the User name and
Password.

However I have already been here and done as you suggest but this is when I
get
the "530 authentication requred" returned from the BT SMTP server.
Can you advise if there is a way on SBS 2003 Exchange to set this
authentication.
(This is easily achived on a direct (non Exchange) Outlook connection with a
tick box)

Due to complicated of the issue, I need your help to collect the following
logs on your server for us to troubleshoot your issue:
1. Can you Telnet to your ISP, please refer to the steps in the the
following KB article:
153119 XFOR: Telnet to Port 25 to Test SMTP Communication
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=153119
2. SMTP logging:
a). Open the properties page of the Default SMTP Virtual Server in Exchange
System Manager.
b). On the General tab, check the "Enable logging" box.
c). Click Properties, click the Extended Properties tab and check all the
boxes on the list.
d). Click OK twice.
e). Right click Default SMTP Virtual Server, select Stop and restart the
SMTP virtual server.
f). Try sending a message to an extnernal recipient to reproduce the issue.
g). Stop the SMTP virtual server.
h). Go to the C:\WINDOWS\system32\LogFiles\SMTPSVC1 folder and send me the
latest two (if there are many) log files to my mailbox.
3. SMTP Tracking:
a). On the server, go to Exchange System Manager.
b). Expand to Yourserver(Exchange)\Servers\Yourserver.
c). Right click Yourserver, go to the General tab.
d). Enable the box Enable Message Tracking, and click OK.
e). Go to Yourserver(Exchange)\Tools\Monitoring and Status\Message Tracking
Center.
f). On the right pane, please fill in the Sender, Server and Recipients
blanks, and then click Find Now.
g). Now the e-mail information will be displayed in the button, and click
it.
h). Now it will show you the Message History, please paste me the full
content of the information.
4. Where did you get the error code "530 authentication required", from
NDR? If yes, please forward the NDR to my mailbox.

I have performed research on your logs file, please see my following
suggestion:
a. Open Exchange Server Manager (ESM), expand to Yourdomain
(Exchange)\Servers\Protocols\SMTP\Default SMTP Virtual Server.
b. Right click Default SMTP Virtual Server, go to Properties, Access tab.
c. Click Authentication. The default settings are: Anonymous access, Basic
authentication and Integrated Windows Authentication.
[note]: Make sure the first check box is enabled on the SMTP gateway.
If the issue persists, please help to gather the following information for
further troubleshooting:
1. Does this issue happen to all the email domains when you send emails
out?
2. If you use DNS to send emails, will this issue occur?
a) On the server, go to Start -> Programs -> Microsoft Exchange -> System
Manager.
b) Expand to Yourdomain (Exchange)\Connectors\SmallBusiness SMTP connector.
c) Right click SmallBusiness SMTP connector, go to Properties. General tab.
d) Select Use DNS to route to each address space on this connector.
e) Click OK and test the issue again.

May I know whether you have tried my steps in the last reply?
I understand that you want to send emails through Exchange Server to ISP
Smart Host. As I mentioned in my first reply, you need to contact your ISP
and ask for the User name and Password to fill in SmallBusiness SMTP
Connector on ESM.
For your current situation, I strongly suggest you that contact your ISP BT
to see whether they allow you to use this method for quick solution.
As this issue is too complicated to be handled in Public Newsgroup, we
suggest you that contact our Microsoft Product Support Services via
telephone so that a dedicated Support Professional can assist with your
request. Please be advised that contacting phone support will be a charged
call.

sorry for not posting -I've been away, just to give you the latest - I
changed my clients ISP over to a company here calle '1&1 Internet - their tag
is SCHLUND and they are based in Germany.
There were other issues regarding their webhosting and additional domains
required which made this a good option for them for other reasons - not least
that they are considerably cheaper and easier (for me) to deal with.
Anyway the long and the short of it is that once the tag had been
transferred, I set up SBS 2003 SMTP using the internet connection wizard -
exactly as I had tried to do with BT- and it worked fine, first time!
I know that this does not explain what the problem is - but it does point to
the source of the problem.

the other issues were not problems as such, just further requirements from
my clients that needed extra action with a web hoster and the change to
another provider satisfied those. These were adding a couple of domains and
more email provision etc.
I have used these providers for myself and for other projects and just 'know
my way around' their way of operating - I'm sure there's many more just as
good - but I don't count BT as one of them!
