We are getting an event 7011 Timeout (30000 milliseconds) waiting for a
transaction response from the NtFrs service on SBS 2003.

I have found references to excluding various system folders from AV
realtime scanning and also disabling the autodisconnect feature for LAN
connections.

Neither of these has worked.

It seems to conincide with the 7:00 a.m. Shadow Copy and then happens
randomly throughout the day and night.

When it happesn the server locks up for 30-60 seconds and appears to be
frozen. Then everything goes back to normal.

I have found MANY references to this issue esp. with SBS - but
unfortauntely - no real solutions.

Help!

Hello Sting,

Thank you for posting to the SBS Newsgroup.

I understand that your SBS 2K3 Server intermittent hangs in the morning,
with Event ID 7011 recorded in Event Log. If I have misunderstood your
concern, please let me know.

Based on my research, this issue can be caused by varies of factors. So I
need your help to gather following information for accurate
troubleshooting:

1> When did the issue occur? Did it occur recently or right after the
installation of SBS? Did you make any changes or install any
software/updates on the server, recently?

2> Besides the event errors, is there any other performance impact or
issues to the server? For example, Can you successfully backup server, can
Exchange Server receive/send emails successfully?

3> You mentioned that "I have found MANY references to this issue esp. with
SBS", I need to know what steps you have performed so we can skip these
steps to save your time and work more efficiency.

4> Based on my research, most of the issue caused by third party software
and the hard disk. So I suggest that have a check.

1. Let's perform a clean boot to see whether there is any interference from
third party software:

a. Click Start->Run, type "MSCONFIG" (without the quotation marks) and
click OK.

b. In the System Configuration Utility (MSConfig) window, click the
"Startup" tab.

c. Click to clear all the check marks from the list box under "Startup".

d. Click the Services tab, check the "Hide all Microsoft Services" box and
then click the "Disable All" button to disable the non-Microsoft services.

e. Click OK to close the MSConfig window. Click Yes when you are asked to
restart your computer in order to enable the changes.

f. After restarting, please check whether this issue still exists.

2. I also suggest that check whether there are any interference comes from
hardware.

5> If the issue persists, please help to gather full content of the error
information in Event viewer. To do so,

On the server, run "eventvwr" (without quotation marks), check whether
there is any error. If yes, double click it, click the Copy button and
paste the full content to the Newsgroup.

Please take your time to perform the steps above and collect the
information for us to troubleshoot your issue. If anything is unclear,
please feel free to let me know. I am looking forward to hearing from you!

Best regards,

Brandy Nee

It always hangs arun 7 or so - but will record the same Event ID 7011
multiple times throughout the day and evening. Each is accompanied by
the server seeming to freeze (users cant do anything) for a minute or
so.

I am a consultant and I was just made aware of the issue - but it
appears to have been happening since install or right after.

No - besides the server being non-responsive for a minute or so -
everything else works perfectly and there are no other event log
messages aroung the same time that would indicate any specific service
causing the issue.

> 3> You mentioned that "I have found MANY references to this issue esp. with

I have excluded all of the MS recc. directories from AV scanning. I
have also temporarily turned off AV scanning (Trend Micro) and this did
not resolve the issue.

I have also changed the autodisconenct to the highest setting to
eliminate that as a possibility with no change in behavior.

I will try this (although it is a production server so I don't know
when I can)

Its running on an HP ML350 with the latest drivers from HP for all
hardware.

Timeout (30000 milliseconds) waiting for a transaction response from

the NtFrs service.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at

Just an FYI - this error is still there after upgrading to SP1 (2003,

Hello Ross,

Thank you for posting back!

I understand that your SBS Server works well except hangs for a while in
the morning, everyday.

According to the information you applied, I suggest that we check following
settings:

1. Are there any additional DCs in SBS domain?

2. If no, on the SBS Server, go to Start -> Run "services.msc", right click
File Replication Service, select Stop. Will this issue persist?

If you have any updates, please feel free to let me know. I am looking
forward to your reply!

Best regards,

Brandy Nee

There is another DC in the network. Is there anything else we can try
in terms of logging WHY this is happening?

Hello Ross,

Thank you for posting back!

I understand that there is another DC in SBS 2K3 domain. In this case, the
Event may come out when FRS is replicating AD information and files between
two DCs. Please understand that troubleshooting takes time. I greatly
appreciated your time and understanding!

Please help to gather following information:

1. First of all, we need to check whether File Replication Service works
correctly on both DCs. To do so, go to both two DCs, run "eventvwr"
(without quotation marks), click File Replication Service, check whether
there is any error inside on the right pane. If yes, double click it, click

the Copy button and paste the full content to the Newsgroup.

[Note]: Please do not customize any result.

2. On the second DC, still run "eventvwr" (without quotation marks), check
whether there is any error in Application, DNS and Security etc. If yes,

double click it, click the Copy button and paste the full content to the
Newsgroup.

Please also check whether there is Event ID 7011 record. If yes, did it
record at the same time as the Event ID 7011 on SBS Server?

3. When did the issue occur? Did SBS 2K3 Server record Event ID 7011
before?

4. Do you use DFS share that some folders replicated over two DCs?

I greatly appreciated your time and co-operation! I am looking forward to
hearing from you!

Hey, Guys,

I had a smiliar error (though I didn't have the hanging part - server
appears to run fine. However, when I checked the Replication service
logs, it had errors in it about the C drive being almost full (and it
is). So I'm working on that issue, maybe that will solve the problem.
Have you checked the space on your drives?

Hello Brandy,

I don't know if Ross is going to reply or not but I am experiencing the same
7011 ntfrs error with the system hanging for about 60 seconds at two
different clients. One is on SBS2003 and the other is on W2K3 Standard SP1.
There is a single DC in both of these domains. There is no pattern to when
they occur but they do usually occur daily at different times.

Both clients also use offline files and do not use DFS. Is it safe to
disable the FRS service?

Hello Jim,

Thank you for posting to the SBS Newsgroup.

I understand that you are running one SBS 2K3 Server and one Windows Server
2003, in this scenario, I do not suggest that you disable FRS service. FRS
service is used for DC replication.

I suggest that you try my previous suggestions and see whether they help.

Thanks a lot for your time!

Best regards,

Brandy Nee

Hello Ross,

Thank you for posting back and keeping us updated!

I am sorry that from your reply, I cannot find the error information I
required in my last reply. For your best convenience, I suggest that gather
following information for us to continue troubleshooting your issue.

I also suggest that you post back to our Newsgroup, so the other customers
who visit our Newsgroup regularly can benefit from your issue and learn
from your interaction with us. Thanks a lot for your understanding!

Well - the timeouts continue to occur although all of my logs are clean
- no FRS errors, no DS errors, no DNS errors, only System error 7011.

No errors whatsoever on the other DC and I am not using DFS so the only
replication is standard AD stuff.

In terms of patterns I have noticed that there are always Security
events logged at the exact time of each timeout that reference process
ID 1396 which is a svchost.exe process.

So I ran filemon from sysinternals and tracked just that .exe and
process ID and found nothing conclusive when matching timestamps.

This is the most elusive error I have ever tried to track down.

I'll post any progress because I know this is a pretty common issue and
there are no known fixes.

thanks,
Ross

Hello Ross,

Thank you for posting back!

I understand that you do not use DFS service and there is no any Event ID
record on another DC at all. You also notice that there is no Event ID
record on FRS, DS and DNS in Event Viewer on SBS Server.

May I know whether there is any other Event ID record in Application,
Security, and System, please? So we can help to perform more research here.

Thanks a lot for your time. If you have any updates, please feel free to
let me know. I am always standing by and looking forward to hearing from
you!

Best regards,

Brandy Nee

There are no errors in ANY event log outside of the normal Terminal
services "can't install a printer" type errors, and the 7011 error.

This a.m. it happened at 4 5 6 7 and 9 a.m. exactly one hour apart
each time.

Everything functionally is fine - no replication errors, no DNS errors,
sire replication is fine, GC is fine.

But still the timeouts...

Hello Ross,

Thank you for posting back!

I am sorry for the delayed response due to weekend. Please understand that
the newsgroups are staffed weekdays by Microsoft Support professionals to
answer your systems and applications questions. Your understanding is
greatly appreciated!

Please see my suggestion:

1. On the SBS Server, go to Start -> Run "services.msc" (without quotation
marks).

2. Double click "File Replication Service", go to Dependencies tab.

3. Please check:

On my test machine, underneath "This service depends on the following
system components" are:

a. COM + Event System. Expand "COM + Event System" is "Remote Procedure
Call (RPC)".

b. Event Log.

c. Remote Procedure Call (RPC).

"The following system components depend on this service" is grayed out.

4. What is your setting?

If you have any updates, please feel free to let me know. I am looking
forward to your reply!

Best regards,

Brandy Nee

Hello Ross,

Thank you for posting back!

I have performed research again and discussed with colleagues on your
issue, please see my following suggestions:

1. Can you manually start File Replication Service?

2. Let's try increasing the default timeout value (the default value is
30,000) and see if this helps:

Path: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control
Value: ServicesPipeTimeout
Type: DWORD

Hello Ross,

Thank you for posting back!

The steps to increase the time out value are used to isolate and
troubleshoot the issue. We can increase the ServicesPipeTimeout value set
in milliseconds. If the issue persists after you increase the time out, we
can change the time out value back. Also, if the issue continues, please

help to gather following information:

1. Run "services.msc", right click File Replication Service, go to
Properties, and Recovery tab. The default settings are:

Restart Service
Restart Service
Restart Service
0 days
30 minutes

2. On the server, run "eventvwr" (without quotation marks), right click
Application, System, and Security, select Save Log File as. Please save as
.evt file and send to my mailbox.

I greatly appreciated your time and looking forward to your reply!

Hello Ross,

Thank you for posting back!

Thanks a lot for your detail event log. Based on my research in our
database, most of the possibility is hardware issue. Please check:

1. Please update the driver to a more recent version.

2. We also have record this issue was caused by Disk I/O due to SATA
drives.

3. Please check whether you have CTFMON.exe installed? please see following
KB article for detail information:
