I currently have an Agere PCI Software modem that I'm using for sending and
receiving faxes via SBS fax service. I'm have problems with recieving faxes.
Often the modem will ring longer than the 3 ring pickup and never pickup. Or
I'll receive a busy signal when calling it even though there are no incoming
or outgoing faxes. I'm receiving the Event ID 32092 "The incoming call
cannot be answered as a fax call"
I figured I'd start with a Windows 2003 supported external modem but can't
seem to find one.
Any suggestions on the modem or issue?
Thanks
Todd
Thanks for posting here.
For your description, I understand that your fax has problem in receiving
faxes. If I am off base, please don't hesitate to let me know.
Ensure your fax installed in OS which is compatible to your modem. You can
check it in Microsoft catalog: www.microsoft.com\hcl
Please try the following steps to troubleshoot the issue:
1. Ensure the value "Rings before answer" to no less than 2 rings. When
this value is set to 1 ring the modem may not always answer correctly.
To do this, follow these steps:
A. In Small Business Server 2000, start the Administrator Console, and
then expand "Microsoft Shared Fax (Local)". In Windows Small Business
Server 2003, start Server Management, and then expand "Fax (Local)".
B. Expand "Devices and Providers", and then click "Devices".
C. In the details pane, right-click the modem that is used for incoming
faxes, and then click "Properties".
D. In the" Rings before answering" box, type "2" (without the quotation
marks), and then click "OK".
2. Reduce the baud rate of the incoming fax modem. To do so:
A. Open My Computer -> Control Panel -> Phone and Modem Options.
B. On the Modems tab, select your modem from the list and click Properties.
C. On the Advanced tab, click Change Default Preferences.
D. The Port speed is 115200 by default; change it to 9600 and see how it
goes.
3. Try turning off compression. To do this, repeat steps 2.A-2.C above, and
then change Compression to Disabled.
4. Configure the Microsoft Shared Fax service to log on using an
administrator account with the following steps:
A. Open the Services MMC snap-in
B. Open properties for the Microsoft Shared Fax service
C. Select the Log On tab
D. Select "This account" and then enter the username and password for an
account that is a member of the Domain Admins group
E. Click OK
F. Restart the Microsoft Shared Fax service
5. Make sure that the modem is connected to a dedicated line, not going
through a PBX or switch. If you are connecting to Internet via DSL, did you
install DSL filter on the phone line? Have you had the line tested?
Please try these steps one by one by, how about the result?
I appreciate you time and effort to perform the steps to test. I am
currently standing by for an update from you and would like to know how
things are going on your end.
Have a nice day!
Best Regards,
Jenny Wu
