Outbound fax problems

I am having a difficult time sending faxes. The fax console reports that the
fax has been sent however the end user reports that their machine gives an
error message asking the sender to retry. I also have issue when sending a
multipage document. I will get the report that the first page went through
and on the second page I get a receiving fax machine did not respond error.

I also get an event ID 32101 and cannot find any info on this either.

Hello,

Couple of things come to mind, after reading your problem. Just tell me a
couple of things first. First of all do you have DSL on the telephone of the
fax? If so do you have a DSL line filter on that line? This DSL Line Filter
must be installed between the line and the server.

Another cause of this problem is the receiver's machine may be the cause of
the error. I to had a very familiar problem, I was able to accept and
transmit to just about all fax machines execpt for this one customer's, I
never was able to receive or transmit a fax to this customer, but after he
replaced the modem inside his machine everything worked!

Check on the DSL Line Filter if you have DSL.

Hello Jason,

Thank you for posting here, and thanks for Meraj's great input.

According to your description, I understand that the fax sent by SBS cannot
be received, and you get even error 32101. If I have misunderstood the
problem, please don't hesitate to let me know.

Based on my research, I suggest we try the following steps to see if we can
resolve this issue:

1. Meraj's inputs is great, please check your phone line and receiver's
machine.

2. Please check the fax modem in our HCL list, ensure it in the list.

Regarding this issue, we usually see it when the fax device is not
compatible with the phone line or not compatible with SBS server or not in
the HCL list. Therefore, I strongly suggest you change another modem to
test this issue.

3. Reduce the baud rate of the fax modem and see how it goes.

A. Open My Computer -> Control Panel -> Phone and Modem Options.
B. On the Modems tab, select your modem from the list and click Properties.
C. On the Advanced tab, click Change Default Preferences.
D. The Port speed is 115200 by default; change it to 9600 and see how it
goes.

4. Try turning off compression. To do this, repeat steps 3.A-3.C above, and
then change Compression to Disabled.

5. In Control Panel, double-click Phone and Modems. Select the modem on the
Modems tab and click Properties. Click Update Driver on the Driver tab, use
the Microsoft Standard 56K Modem driver and see if Fax works.

6. If the issue persists, we may need to reinstall fax component on SBS

The detail steps:

A. Rename the keys and files below to *.old

1) HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Fax
2) HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Fax
3) C:\Program Files\Microsoft Windows Small Business Server\fax
4) The ''SBSMIS-FAX.log'' file under ''C:\Program Files\Microsoft
Integration\Windows Small Business Server 2003\Logs''.
5) The ''SBSMSI-faxcfg.log'' file under ''C:\Program Files\Microsoft
Integration\Windows Small Business Server 2003\Logs''.
6) The ''faxsetup.log'' file under ''C:\WINDOWS\''.

B. Delete the following registry keys:

HKLM/SOFTWARE/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Telephony/Country List
HKLM/SOFTWARE/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Telephony/Locations registry
Keys

C. Access Add/Remove Programs, Add/Remove Windows Components, uncheck ''Fax
Services'' to uninstall it.

D. Once it is uninstalled, access Add/Remove Programs to reinstall it.

E. Then, access ''Add/Remove Programs again'', this time, we will click
''Change/Remove'' on the ''Windows Small Business Server 2003'' item:

1) Click ''Next'' on the ''Microsoft Windows Small Business Server Setup''
page.
2) Click ''Next'' on the ''Windows Configuration'' page.

Note: It states that ''This will take approximately 30 minutes'', it is
referring to the total time it will take in the first SBS component
installation. For the task such as remove a specific component, it will
just take couple of minutes.

3) Now, in the ''Component Selection'' page, choose ''Remove' before the
''Fax Services'' item.
4) Click ''Next'', and then click ''Next'' again to confirm ''Component
Summary''. You will be prompted to insert the SBS setup Disc 1. and then
follow the guide the finish the reinstallation.

F. Once the removal process is completed, access ''Windows Small Business
Server setup'' again in ''Add/Remove Programs'', proceed to the ''Component
Selection'' page, and then choose ''Install'' for the ''Fax Services'' item
to reinstall fax service.

If we cannot resolve the issue after we perform the above steps, please
kindly help me collect some information for further investigation:

1. Please capture screenshots on the error messages and send the pictures
to me at v-te...@microsoft.com

2. Save the application event log and system event log as evt files on the
SBS and send to my mailbox: v-te...@microsoft.com
