Hello!

I have a problem with two SBS-installations. http://companyweb dosent
work, "The page cannot be found 404" is shown. Some SBS-guides such
as backup and monitoring shows the same message. The IIS seems to work
but not the connection to msde-database.

In the event log there is an error message: ID 1000, Windows Sharepoint
Services 2.0: Unable to connect to database STS_Config on
Servername/sharepoint

The only difference in installation on the last SBS that I know of is
that I choose another server name in the first part of the installation
and another in "continue SBS-Setup guide". The name change was done
with the SBS-guides, no manual tweaking was done.

Is I possible that the name change is the problem?
Can this be corrected?

Hello Henrik,

Thank you for posting to the SBS Newsgroup.

I understand that when trying to access the Companyweb, you encounter error
404. If I have misunderstood your issue, please let me know.

Based on my experience, there are various factors can cause this issue. so
please take your time to perform my suggestions. If the issue persists,
please help me to gather more detailed information for further research:

=========

Suggestion 1:

I suggest that we re-run the CEICW (configure e-mail and internet
connection wizard) to configure the IIS setting back to default. Please
follow the steps in KB 825763 for detailed steps:

825763 How to configure Internet access in Windows Small Business Server
2003
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=825763

Suggestion 2:

Based on my experience, this problem also can be caused by incorrect
directory security settings. Please follow the steps below to confirm the
directory security settings.

For Companyweb:

a. Open IIS snap-in.
b. Right click Companyweb and click Properties.
c. On the Web Site:

Description: Companyweb
IP address: SBS Internal IP address.
TCP Port 80
SSL port 444
Check the boxes: Enable HTTP Keep-Alives and Enable logging.

d. On the Home Directory tab:

A directory located on this computer.
Local path C:\inetpub\companyweb
Read, Log visits, and Index this resource.
Application name: root
Execute permissions: Scripts only.
Application pool: DefaultAppPool.

e. On Directory Security tab.
f. Click Edit under "Authentication and access control", make sure that
only the "Enable anonymous access" has been checked.
g. Click Edit under "IP address and domain name restriction", and make sure
that "Granted access" has been selected.
h. Click Edit under "Secure communications", and make sure that "Require
secure channel (SSL)" has not been checked.

Suggestion 3:

As you mentioned you got Event ID 1000, please see KB 840685 if you meet
the exact same symptom.

An event ID 1000 error message is logged to the application event log when
you restart Windows Small Business Server 2003
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/840685

Suggestion 4:

This is related to the issue addressed in the following links, please try
to apply the following two hotfix to see if the problem can be fixed:

833019 You Receive an Error Message When You Install Windows SharePoint
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=833019

832880 You cannot successfully install the intranet component or connect to
http://companyweb in Windows Small Business Server 2003
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=832880

=========

If the issue persists after you perform all the steps above, please help me
to gather more detailed information for further research:

1. Could you access Companyweb before? If yes, did you make any changes on
the SBS Server or install any software/updates on the Server, recently?

2. Just to double confirm, can you access Companyweb on the SBS Server
Console?

3. Open IE -> Tools -> Internet Options -> Advanced -> Uncheck the box
"Show friendly HTTP error messages". Reproduce the issue, and what is the
new error message? Please type the error message word by word to the
Newsgroup for accurate research. You also can capture a screen shot for it.

4. Please explain in detail "I choose another server name in the first part

of the installation and another in "continue SBS-Setup guide". The name
change was done with the SBS-guides, no manual tweaking was done."

a. What is the "another server name"?
b. What are the "first part of the installation" and "continue SBS-Setup
guide"?

5. On the SBS Server Console, can you access RWW (https://localhost/remote)
and OWA (https://localhost/exchange)?

6. Are you using the SBS Standard Edition or Premium Edition? Have you
applied the SP1 component?

Please take your time to perform the steps and gather the information for
research. I am looking forward to hearing from you!

Best regards,

Brandy Nee

Hello Brandy!

Thank you for your answer!

You have understood my problem correctly, when I try to access the
Companyweb, I encounter error
404.

I have re-run the the CEICW several times.

Regarding incorrect directory security settings: my configuration is
exactly like the one you suggested except that "Enable anonymous
access" under "Authentication and access control" is not checked. But
is not checked in any of my SBS-installation and they work fine.

The 833019 hotfix couldn't be installed

The 832880 hotfix could be installed but it didn't help

=========

This is a newly installed server and I have never been able to access
companweb on this server, not form a client and not from the server
itself.

The error message is the standard one:

The page cannot be found

changed, or is temporarily unavailable.

Please try the following:

Make sure that the Web site address displayed in the address bar of

the words HTTP and 404.
Open IIS Help, which is accessible in IIS Manager (inetmgr), and search

Regarding the servername change:
When I start installing the SBS and boot from the CD and I get to
choose partition and a little later I am asked for a computer name.
Here a name was chosen. When this "text-based" installation part is
finished the server boots up in windows mode. In this stage I cancel
the "continuing SBS setup" because I need to partition the other
disks and load some device drivers. When this is done I click the
"continued SBS-setup icon" on the desktop. Now in this
"continuing SBS setup guide" I am asked for a domain name and a
Server name... This is where I choose a different name than under the
"text-based" installation.

I suspect that this causes the problem, but I am not sure of this. The
Installation went thru without any error messages.

I cant access https://localhost/remote from the server

I can access https://localhost/exchange from the server

I am using SBS Standard Edition with SP1 included fom installations CD.

Any further help would be greatly appreciated!

Hello Henrik,

Thank you for posting back!

Since the Companyweb never works, so we are not sure whether you have
correctly installed or configured the SBS Server, a clean installation may
be needed for the final resolution.

To check whether you have correctly installed the SBS Server, please help
me to gather following information:

a. The setup.log in the %system drive%\program files\Microsoft
Integration\windows small business server 2003\logs.

b. On the server, run "eventvwr" (without quotation marks), check whether
there are any errors. If yes, double click it, click the Copy button and
paste the full content to the Newsgroup.

You can send the setup.log file to my mailbox.

Thanks a lot for your time!

Best regards,

Brandy Nee

C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server
Extensions\60\isapi\_vti_adm\admin.dll
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server
Extensions\60\isapi\_vti_auth\author.dll
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server
Extensions\60\isapi\owssvr.dll
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server
Extensions\60\isapi\shtml.dll

===========

If the issue persists, please help me to gather following information for
further analysis:

1. On the SBS Server, open IE -> Tools -> Internet Options -> Advanced ->
Uncheck the box "Show friendly HTTP error messages". Close IE, open IE
again. Type https://localhost/remote. type the error message word by word
to the Newsgroup for research.

2. Please help me to gather the Companyweb IIS log. To do so:

a) Go to Server Management\Advanced Management\Internet Information
Services\ Web Site\Companyweb.

b) Right click Companyweb -> Properties -> Web Site tab.

c) Check the box Enable Logging, and the Active Log Format is W3C Extended

I need to confirm if you install .net framework 2.0 on your SBS Server. If
you have .net framework 2.0 installed, have you applied Windows SharePoint
Service 2.0?

=========

Please see my suggestion:

1> If you have .net framework 2.0 installed, you can either temporarily
switch to .net framework 1.0 or continue installing Windows SharePoint
Service 2.0:

a. To temporarily switch to .net framework 1.0:

Expand to Internet Information Services\Domain\Web Sites. Right click
Companyweb, go to Properties. On the ASP.NET tab, temporarily switch to
.net framework 1.0. Click OK. Go to Start -> Run "iisreset" (without
quotation marks) and test the issue again.

2> If you do not have .net framework 2.0 installed, please re-register the
four .dll files and see how it goes:

Open a command window on the SBS Server, type following commands:

regsvr32 C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server

Extensions\60\isapi\_vti_adm\admin.dll

regsvr32 C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server

Extensions\60\isapi\_vti_auth\author.dll

regsvr32 C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server
Extensions\60\isapi\owssvr.dll
regsvr32 C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server
Extensions\60\isapi\shtml.dll

Open Internet Information Services\Domain\Web Service Extensions. On the
right pane, high light "Windows SharePoint Services", and click Prohibit.
Double click "Windows SharePoint Services", on the Required Files tab.
Remove the four .dll files. Click Add to add the four .dll files to the
list again. Run "iisreset".

3> Open the IIS management console, navigate to Web Sites->companyweb, are
there any folders/files within the companyweb site? Please also check if
the files/subfolders do exist in the c:\inetpub\companyweb folder.

4> Can you access http://companyweb/default.aspx on the SBS console?

Please take your time to perform the steps. If you have any updates, please

Hello again!

I changed permissions for the "Temporary ASP.NET Files-folder" as you
told me. But it didn't help.

Regarding the C:\Inetpub\companyweb\web.config file:
The string "<customErrors mode="RemoteOnly"/>" didn't exist in
the file, instead the string "<customErrors mode="On" />" was
present. I deleted it and wrote "<customErrors mode="Off" />"
instead.

However the error message in internet explorer is the same.
There is no error message in the event viewer that I can connect to
this problem.

Regards Henrik
