I had a fun incident at a client earlier today when out of the blue
something went horribly wrong and RPC started giving me access denied errors
(error code 5 for the Network Service credentials). If RPC dies, you are
pretty much stranded, so I hope this article saves someone some time in the
future.

After a call to PSS about the matter (It's nice to be a Microsoft partner
with no charge business critical support available), here is the sequence of
steps to restore appropriate security settings to the Remote Procedure Call
(RPC) service that is powered by the rpcss.dll:

1. Run MMC
2. Add the "Security Configuration and Analysis" snap-in
3. Choose to open a non-existing database (through a shortcut menu)
4. Choose the "setup security.inf" file
5. Analyse or just "configure now" (through a shortcut menu)
6. Reboot

At that point my system was back to life. So if your RPC service dies, and
you weren't compromised, this may help you to get back online and users off
your back.
