Before discovering that Trend had updated with a bad pattern file I was
wondering why my SBS (and workstations) was working so hard and the network
was simply not usable. I couldn't access the Internet and couldn't do much
with the server as well. I tried booting into safe mode and then decided to
roll the system state back to the last good configuration. After doing that
and re-starting the server would begin to boot loading the BIOS and other
system files but when the Windows Server splash screen came up a few seconds
after that a message came on the screen that said something to the effect of
{When trying to update the password the value provided as the current
password is not correct}. After that it begins the reboot process again and
the same thing happens again. What can I do to get this corrected?

Thanks For Any Suggestions
Jeff

Hello Jeff,

Thank you for posting to the SBS Newsgroup.

I understand the problem is:

On your SBS 2K3 server, you received the following Lsass.exe system error
during startup:

"When trying to update a password the return status indicates that the

value provided as the current password is not correct."

When you click OK on this message, the server restarts. This error occurs
in all startup modes, including Safe Mode, Safe Mode with Networking, Safe
Mode with Command Prompt, Directory Services Restore Mode. Therefore, you
are not able to start the server or restore the system state from backup.

I'm afraid that at this point, the best way to restore the server is:
Perform a server reinstallation and restore all information from the backup
media. For more info about how to restore from a backup media, please check
the following White Paper:

Backing Up and Restoring Windows Small Business Server 2003
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/sbs/2003/maintain/bkuprstr.mspx

[Note] If your SBS 2K3 is running on Dell OEM versions, you cannot start
Recovery Console by booting from SBS 2003 Disk 1. Booting from this CD
starts an automated setup program that performs a clean install of SBS
2003. Although this automated setup program will not overwrite the existing
copy of SBS 2003, it does prevent you from starting Recovery Console. For
more information and a workaround, see the following KB article:

Small Business Server 2003 installation starts automatically when you try
to start the Recovery Console from the Dell OEM version of the Small
Business Server 2003 CD
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/885191

More information: If the registry hives in the Repair folder are old,
follow these steps to recover:

1. Perform a parallel installation of SBS 2003.

2. If you are using a third-party backup program, install the backup
program.

3. Catalog the backup tape that contains the most recent system state
backup.

4. Restore the system state to an alternate location.

5. Copy the registry hives from the restored system state to the
%windir%\System32\Config folder of the original installation. If you are
using Ntbackup.exe on Windows Server 2003, the registry hives will be in a
folder named Registry in the location where you restored the system state.

I hope the above info helps. If you have any questions or concern, please
do not hesitate to post back.

Best regards,

Brandy Nee
