Hi,

Last week I had a problem on a 2003 SBS server. After a reboot it just
lost all comunications with clients. Network was fine, and could ping
client -> client, but nothing from client -> server or server ->
client.

After I checked a lot of things, and trying some operations (flushing
DNS, arp chaches, etc), I ended up unistalling the DNS server and
reinstalling it. It worked and now everything "works" again, but I
lost some part of the domain.

When checking all computers from "my network places" and I browse the
domain from a client, I can see all the clients, but not the server.
If I do it from the server it can't even see itself or the clients.

Also, I have a login script that displays the computer name, user name
and domain, but now the domain variable is empty.

I've checked DNS logs and there are a lot of 4004, 4015, 4521 and 6702
errors. On the DNS server settings everything seems OK though.

I'm thinking it's something with active directory not rebuilding
properly.

Other than that, clients log in as usual, sharepoint is working,
exchange, IIS, shared folders and printers are all normal.

running the support tools "dcdiag /c /v" and netdiag would be good starting
points. likely something s missing in your dns re-creation.

Hello Customer,

Thank you for posting here. Let's also thank Kevin for the input.

According to your description, I understand that you get some DNS errors,
and cannot see SBS in "my network places" after you reinstall DNS on SBS.
If I have misunderstood the problem, please don't hesitate to let me know.

Based on my research, I suggest we try the following steps to see if we can
resolve this issue:

Step 1: Reinstall DNS on SBS thru the recommended steps:

Uninstall DNS:
1. Right-click My Network Places , and then click Properties .
2. In the Network and Dial-Up Connections window on the Advanced menu,
click Optional Networking Components .
3. In the Windows Optional Networking Components Wizard, click to select
Networking Services , and then click Details .
4. In the Networking Services window, click to clear the box next to
Domain Name System (DNS) check box, click OK , and then click Next . This
removes DNS.

Before you reinstall DNS, delete the following files:
a. Cache.dns-which is located in %systemroot%\Winnt\System32\DNS
b. Netlogon.dns-which is located in %systemroot%\Winnt\System32\Config
c. Netlogon.dnb-which is located in %systemroot%\Winnt\System32\Config

Reinstall DNS:
1. Right-click My Network Places , and then click Properties .
2. In the Network and Dial-Up Connections window on the Advanced menu
click Optional Networking Components .
3. In the Windows Optional Networking Components Wizard, click to select
the Networking Services check box, and then click Details .
4. In the Networking Services dialog box, click to select the Domain Name
System (DNS) check box, click OK , and then click Next .
5. Insert the operating system installation disc when you are prompted,
click OK , and DNS is reinstalled.
6. Restart the computer.

Step 2: Turn on DNS dynamic update protocol on the internal network
adapter:

1. On the desktop, right-click My Network Places , and then click
Properties .
2. Right-click the internal network adapter, and then click Properties .
3. Click TCP/IP , and then click Properties .
4. Click the Advanced button.
5. Click the DNS tab, and then click to select the Register this
connection's addresses in DNS check box at the bottom of the tab.
6. Click OK until the Network Properties dialog box is closed.
7. Click Start , click Run , type cmd , and then press ENTER.
8. At a command prompt, stop and restart the Netlogon service and initiate
the registration of the network adapter in DNS. To do this, use the
following command-line statements:
a. net stop netlogon
b. net start netlogon
c. ipconfig /registerdns

Verify that the zone file now has the following subdomains:
_msdcs
_sites
_tcp
_udp

3. After we reinstall the DNS on SBS, we need to run the CEICW:

Go through the follow KB and rerun CEICW carefully.

How to configure Internet access in Windows Small Business Server 2003
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/825763/en-us

4. You cannot see SBS in "my network places". This is most cause by the
WINS settings. Please ensure the WINS of SBS internal NIC is pointing to
itself.

If we cannot resolve the issue after we perform the above steps, please
help me collect some information for further investigation:

Gather MPS network report on SBS:

a. Download MPSrepot_network from
http://download.microsoft.com/download/b/b/1/bb139fcb-4aac-4fe5-a579-30b0bd9
15706/MPSRPT_NETWORK.EXE

b. Run MPSRPT_NETWORK.exe on the server box.

c. The tool will automatically collect the information. This procedure will
take 10~15 minutes.

d. Open Windows Explorer, navigate to the folder:
%SystemRoot%\MPSReports\Network\Reports\Cab\

e. Send the .cab file directly to me at v-te...@microsoft.com

I hope these steps will give you some help.

Thanks and have a nice day!

Best regards,

Terence Liu(MSFT)
