When trying to print from IE to a shared fax server from any Vista
Ultimate PC on my network, I get the following message:

This fax cannot be sent at this time. Please launch the Compose Form
from Windows Fax and Scan and click on New Fax to attach this document
to send it out as fax.

I've set up fax accounts on all workstations and faxing works from the
Windows Fax and Scan applet. The applet however, pops up a similar
message, warning about the fax accounts not being set up, yet will
still allow you to fax out.

Hello Alex,

Thank you for posting here.

According to your description, I understand that you get error "This fax

cannot be sent at this time. Please launch the Compose Form from Windows
Fax and Scan and click on New Fax to attach this document to send it out as

fax" when you try to print from IE7 on Windows Vista to a shared fax
printer. If I have misunderstood the problem, please don't hesitate to let
me know.

Based on my research, this behavior occurs when Internet Explorer 7 is
running in protected mode. Internet Explorer 7 security settings do not let
you print Web pages to a fax printer.

To work around this behavior, I suggest you turn off protected mode in
Internet Explorer 7 on Vista, and then print the Web page to the fax
printer.

1. Open IE7 on Vista

2. Click Tools -> Internet Options

3. Click Security tab, highlight Internet, uncheck option "Enable Protected
Mode (requires restarting Internet Explorer)", highlight Local intranet,
uncheck option "Enable Protected Mode (requires restarting Internet
Explorer)" too.

4. Click OK button twice

5. Restart the IE7

6. Ensure that the IE7 window down at the bottom says "Protected Mode off".
Then, test this issue.

I hope these steps will give you some help.

Thanks and have a nice day!

Best regards,

Terence Liu(MSFT)

That suggestion didn't seem to work.

I'm pretty certain the issue isn't IE related.

Here is some more information:

This is an SBS 2003 R2 Network with Vista workstations. The
workstations were set up to use the fax server as instructed within
the help files for a network fax server. By that, I followed the "To
send and receive faxes using a server."

These were the directions:

<quote>

Before you begin, make sure that your computer is connected to the
network. Also, make sure that you know the network address of the fax
server (for example, \\mycompanyfaxserver) and that you have
permission to connect to it. To obtain permission or to obtain the fax
server address, contact a system administrator.

Click the Start button , click All Programs, and then click Windows
Fax and Scan.

To use Fax view, at the bottom of the left pane, click Fax.

Click Tools, and then click Fax Accounts.

Click Add, and then, in the Fax Setup Wizard, click Connect to a fax
server on my network and follow the instructions for connecting to a
fax server.

</quote>

I followed these directions and when I print from IE, I get the error
I first mentioned to you. When I print to this fax printer FROM
ANYWHERE ELSE, including the fax applet, I get:

<quote>
to send faxes using the printer that you selected, you must first
create a fax account. Windows will send this fax using your default
fax account instead. For more infromation, search for "Set up your
computer to send and receive faxes" in Help and Support.
</quote>

When I click OK on this message, I can still fax out, though the error
is a hindrance and it disrupts my users. The message I get from IE7
does not allow me to print at all. I have come up with a work around,
but I would rather this work the way it was intended.

Any suggestions?

Hello Alexander,

Thank you for your reply.

Let's continue troubleshoot this issue. First, please let me know that:

1. Does the shared fax install on SBS?
2. Do you join the Vista client to SBS domain thru connectcomputer wizard?

In SBS network, after your join the client computer to SBS domain thru
connectcomputer wizard, the SBS fax client will automatically install on
client computers. The directions you goes through is not suit for SBS. I
suggest we try the following steps to see if we can resolve this issue:

1. I suggest you install the following Vista compatibility hotfix on SBS
first:

Windows Small Business Server 2003: Windows Vista and Outlook 2007
compatibility update
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=926505

2. Please rollback any fax related actions through your directions, clean
the Vista.

3. I suggest you rejoin the problematic client to SBS domain to install the
fax client on Vista:

a. Disjoin domain: Right click My Computer->Properties->Computer Name
tab->Change button->Select Workgroup->click OK twice and reboot it.
b. Create user account and computer account thru the Add User Wizard:
SBS->Server Management console->Users->Add a User
c. Rejoin domain thru connectcomputer wizard on client: On the client,
access http://SBSname/connectcomputer/. Finish the wizard and reboot it.

After reboot the Vista client, the SBS fax client will be installed on it.
Please check and test this issue.

If we cannot resolve the issue after we perform the above steps, please
help me collect some information for further investigation:

1. Does this issue happen on all Vista clients?

2. Please capture screenshots on the error messages and send the pictures
to me at v-te...@microsoft.com

I hope these steps will give you some help.

Thanks and have a nice day!

Best regards,

Terence,

I've done everything you've asked and still no progress.

I've attached screenshots of the problems, and yes, it happens on ALL
vista clients. I've even tried setting up a new user (in case the
original user's profile gets reapplied) and the issue still occurs.

Question, does the fax client install under the local machine, current
user or all users?

I ask this because for the new user, there were no fax settings or fax
printers configured, and I had to set it up from scratch.

Can you also verify the "correct" way to use shared faxing from a
vista client? My users are using the shared fax as a printer, as in
they select the fax from their printers and print to the fax.

Thank you for your help, I wait for your reply.

Hello Alexander,

Thank you for your email.

From the screenshot of IE error, I find you do not turn off IE7 protected
mode as I suggested. Please perform he steps in my first reply.

For the Word error, I suggest you try the following steps:

1. Deleted all of the fax printers the vista client.
2. From the Vista client restarted the fax service
3. Opened the Fax and Scan Windows
3. Created a fax account on the vista client again thru the following
steps:

http://blogs.technet.com/sbs/archive/2007/05/22/how-to-configure-fax-on-wind
ows-vista-for-an-sbs-2003-environment.aspx

4. At the bottom of Fax and Scan it should read "All fax accounts are
accessible."
5. Check Printers and it's now should show "Fax on Servername" instead of
"Server-Fax on Servername"
6. Test fax

If we cannot resolve the issue after we perform the above steps, please
help me collect some information for further investigation:

1. Does the issue happen on XP clients?

2. Does the issue happen on SBS itself?

Best regards,

Terence Liu(MSFT)

=================================

Terence, I did turn off IE7 protected mode, but since it didn't do
anything, I turned it back on for protection. Frankly, diminishing my
security is not a solution I'm comfortable with.

As for the other solution, I have already tried those suggestions
before contacting you, except for restarting the fax service on the
Vista Client. On this vista client, it is set to Manual, and when I
start it, it runs for a few seconds, then terminates saying "The fax
service on Local Computer started then stopped. Some services stop
automatically if they are not in use by other services or programs".

Also, the Printers window has always displayed "Fax on servername"
instead of "Server-Fax on Servername" however, in the print dialog,
menu when accessed via windows or other programs shows up as
"\\servername\fax" I'm not sure if that makes any difference, but if
the naming convention you mention matters that much, I figured I
should call your attention to this.

As for your questions, there are no XP clients we can test with at
present, though we will try to find one over the weekend. Regarding
the SBS server itself, no, this issue does not occur on SBS itself,
but then again, SBS is printing directly to fax, rather than through a
"shared" fax. Personally, I am inclined to believe it is a Vista
issue. How would you like me to test this on SBS?

regional support phone numbers.

However I will do my best to be of assistance if you still want to continue
here.

For the fax service start message "The fax service on Local Computer
started then stopped", it is normal on Vista client, please do not worry
about it. Please ensure you perform all the steps I mentioned.

Since the previous steps unable to resolve this issue and this issue happen
