Hello All

I am currently wondering a SBS 2003 server and I would like to
purchase the transition pack so I can move the exchagne server to a
different serer and have multiple domain controlers and so on...
However I can only find documentation for the SBS2003 R2 Transition
Pack.

My question is, does the R2 transition pack work for the orignal SBS
2003? I have looked everywhere for the answer and i can figure out
what the licensing differnece is between R2 and orignal, and if that
screws up the transition pack.

Also once i use the transition pack, I thinks, from what i am read
that my current SBS CALs are turned into 1 windows server 2003 CAL and
one exchange 2003 CAL for each SBS cal i already have. However, If i
need to buy more CALs, after I transition, do I buy the windows server
2003 CALs and exchange CALs, or do I buy transition pack CALs?

Thank you

No, the R2 version will not work in the RTM SBS. If you upgraded to SP1,
then it should work.

You don't need the transition pack to have multiple DCs. The only limitation
is that the FSMO roles must stay with the SBS server.

If you need additiional CALs, you buy individual CALs after you run the
Transition Pack. You no longer have SBS. You have full Server 2003 and
Exchange 2003.

Also, just to be clear. You need to buy a Transition Pack CAL for every SBS
CAL you have.

Oh, Ok.
I actually am running SBS2003 SP1, ( I didn't realize the difference
between Sp1 and just the base install was so important)
and I have 15 total (SBS2003 user) CALs.
5 came with the install, and I bought 10 more.

So your saying that I can use the R2 Transition Pack, with my SBS2003
Sp1 install?

Heres what i am planing on buying,
-(1) SBS2003 R2 Transition Pack
-(15) Transition Pack Cals
-and if i need it in the future Server 2003 Cals, and Exchange Cals?

Is that correct?

Oh and i need to move the FSMO role to a different server, which is
why i need to do this.

Thank You Very Much

Nick please post you're updates here!!! I'm in a similar dilema with my
SBS2003 R2 Premium. Let us know which services you ended up splitting off and
what costing you ruffly got...

Also you might want to look at bumping your SBS CALS up to 20 first, as I'm
sure it cheaper the buying the difference in CALS once you've transitioned.

You get 5 CALs with the TP.

No, it isn't cheaper, IME.

Also, the cost of Premium TP is a lot more than Standard.

Also, to be clear - the Transition Pack unlocks SBS, turning it into Server
2k3 Standard Edition, and Exchange 2k3 Standard Edition. It does not provide
any assistance or help in moving applications or roles. You're on your own
once you've run the TP. FWIW, here's my standard "what to watch out for"
for the TP:
=========
Before you run the Transition Pack there are a few steps you should take to
ensure a smooth transiition:
1.) Do a thorough, complete, VERIFIED backup. If it isn't verified and
tested, it isn't a backup, IMHO.
2.) Clean up your HD. Remove temporary files, old logs, and so forth. Run
Disk Cleanup (cleanmgr.exe)
3.) Defragment the HD. Use the built in, or use a good third party such as
PerfectDisk from Raxco.
4.) Disconnect the server from the internet completely. (Easiest way is just
unplug the network from the back of the server.)
5.) Stop any third party services that are running as a system account and
set them to disabled or uninstall them. This includes AV, disk utilities,
and any real-time monitoring programs.
6.) Remove Veritas BackupExec (see KB: 914990)
7.) Run regedit and check for the presence of the key:
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Small Business. If it exists, remove it.

That's it. Just make sure you have the matching TP version to your SBS
version. (ie, SP1 for SP1 SBS, etc.)

Also, make sure you have media kits available for your individual server
software packages. You shouldn't need them, but it's good to have, just in
case.

Finally, just run the transition. Expect it to take 2+ hours, and 7 or more
reboots. Even if you give it the logon password, you may get prompted the
first reboot - I did in 4 of 7 transitions I did last spring. No discernable
pattern to it. Once that first one completes, though, you can go grab some
lunch/dinner/whatever and it should run by itself.

Thanks alot for helping me figure this all out, licensing has always
been very confusing for me. I have two final questions if you wouldn't
mind...

1) So since 5 cals come with the TP, and i plan to buy a 20 pack of
TP Cals, and i currently have 15 SBS Cals, How many will i end up with
when im done?

2) I plan on having at least 3 total servers in my main office after i
finish upgrading. Do i need to have cals for every user, for every
server, meaning if i have 20 users and 3 servers running w2k3 server,
do i need 60 w2k3 server cals, or just 20 which work for all servers?

You should buy a 10 pack or 2 5 packs. You don't have the SBS CALs to go
with that many TP CALs. It's really simple. One SBS CAL - One TP CAL.

Answering your second one is trickier, and I honestly can't answer without a
whole lot more information. I suggest you discuss your licensing needs with
a licensing expert. MS actually has an online licensing wizard, I think - I
saw a demo of it in January, but don't have the link here. Google should
find it.

Hi Nick,

Thanks for posting in our newsgroup.

I am sorry for the delay due to the weekend.

Here are the answers to your questions:

Q: Does the R2 transition pack work for the original SBS 2003?

No. Based on my research, there is no Transition Pack for SBS 2003 SP0. SBS
with SP1 Transition Pack and R2 Transition Pack is available. If you want
to use R2 Transition Pack, you need to upgrade to SBS 2003 R2.

Q: If I need to buy more CALs, after I transition, do I buy the windows

server 2003 CALs and exchange CALs, or do I buy transition pack CALs?

A: Transition Pack CALs should be different from the Windows Server
Enterprise 2003 CALs. Therefore, I would like to suggest that you call
1-800-426-9400 (select option 4), Monday through Friday, 6:00 A.M. to 5:30
P.M. (PST) to speak directly to a Microsoft licensing specialist.
