error using admt sbs 2003

access each other via Windows Explorer (via IP#), but I am having a hard time
getting them to communicate when I use the Active Directory Migration Tool.
The MS migration guide says to start with User migrations first, so I tried.
However, as soon as I select the source and target domains, then click next,
I get these errors:
"The program cannot open the required dialog box because no locations can be
found. Close this message, and try again."
I close it and get this message:
"Failed to initialize object picker for the source domain."
I specified IP#'s for both servers within the same range and modified the
DNS forwarders according to the SBS migration guide. Please help :(

For your description, I understand that you get error of "The program
cannot open the required dialog box because no locations can be found.
Close this message, and try again." when you try to migrate from SBS 2000
to SBS 2003 using ADMT. If I am off base, please don't hesitate to let me
know.
Based on my research, the "The program cannot open the required dialog box
because no locations can be found" error should be caused by the
Single-Label domain.
To resolve the issue, we generally have the following options:
1. On the target Windows SBS 2003 server (where ADMT locates), ensure the
following registry entry is added:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Netlogon\Parameters
And add the following Reg_Dword value:
AllowSingleLabelDnsDomain
We can set the value to 0x1 according to the KB article you specified.
2. We can install ADMT on the source Windows SBS 2000 server and perform
the migration there.
Try to test, does the problem happen again?

Hi everyone,
I'm trying to do a SBS Migration from 2003 to 2008 using a different
domain name. I found a blog on Microsoft's technet site that states
specifically what to do. However one of the first steps is to resolve
both domains from both servers in which I'm finding difficult. I have
setup forwarders on both servers as directed by the guide. When I go to
the comand prompt and try to ping gjra.local on the SBS 2003 server I
get an error stating ping request could not find host. However when I
ping the IP of the server I'm able to getr ping requests. I think there
is something wrong with the SBS 2003 server resolving the domain name.
Any ideas?

Hi there - please do yourself a big favor - when you want to use the MS
public newsgroups, don't use the horrid Techarena mirrors. Access the groups
directly via a newsreader client. You (and everyone else) will find it much
less irritating to deal with.
That said, you can't migrate from 2003 to 2008 and use a different domain
name, if you're talking about AD. That isn't possible / supported.

Generally, I am with Lanwench that it is not supported to migrate from one domain to other domain with different domain name. However, technically, this could be done.
There are many reasons why a company may need or want to change their domain name, there could have been a company merger/split, the current domain name is too
long or not to their liking, or simply the company�s name has changed. For more information, please refer to the below SBS official blog:

Yes, using ADMT and a host of other manual tools (exmerge, whatnot) you can
move your users and data to a *new* domain.

Yes, that's just a work around and users have to do a lot of work afterwards e.g change user permissions or refresh user templates etc.
