ok, I have read the info for DNS vs Smarthost, however for a couple of
reasons we need to route email through DNS.

This works, and has worked perfectly for us.

The only issue comes from when we try to send emails to our own public
domain. eg.

local domain is domain.local
public domain ( website, email, etc. ) is domain.com.au

If I send an email to ha...@domain.com.au is is automatically routed to
ha...@domain.local!!! Which effectively means we can't send emails to our
own email domain.

Now I would have thought the DNS Server would have distringuished between
domain.local and domain.com.au???

All our emails to any other domain are delivered fine.

Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks

Luke

Hi Luke!

I think you are leaving some details out here. Let me guess...

- You are using the POP3 connector with individual accounts.
- You don't download all the accounts from the POP3 server into your SBS
box.

If so... maybe you are having one of these problems?

1) When you try to send an email from your domain to one of those addresses
you get back an NDR from the SBS saying that the mailbox doesn't exist.
2) When you try to send an email from your domain to one of those addresses
the email ends on the Exchange mailbox instead of your ISP.

Realize these problems have nothing to do with DNS or Smarthost... it is
simply a matter of how Exchange handles mail (remember that the user *has*
the @domain.com.au address too!). If you are having problem #1 the solution
is easy: Right-click virtual SMTP server-> Properties ->Messages tab-> Put
the mailserver FQDN of your domain under "Forward all mail with unresolved
recipients to host".

Now, if you are having problem #2... then I can only assume that the
username exists on the SBS box, but you are NOT downloading his/her mailbox
using the POP3 connector. If so, then you need to do the "trick" I mentioned
on #1 and then delete the .com.au address from the SMTP list (and uncheck
the automatically update stuff). If you ARE downloading his/her mail to the
SBS box then there is no point in doing what you want.

Is this what you wanted to do? or this was a swing-and-miss? :-)

Hi Javier,

Thankyou for your excellent advice.

You hit the nail on the head, and now I understand why it is not working.

Thanks again

Luke
