Hello,

I am trying to restore a share point backup to a restore site and database
without success. I have done it in the past and it worked perfectly. I am
following the same instructions I did last time.

C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator>"c:\program files\common
files\microsoft
shared\web server extensions\60\bin\stsadm.exe" -o createsiteinnewdb -url
http:
//companyweb/sites/restore2 -ownerlogin domain\ADMINISTRATOR -owneremail
admini...@domain.local -databasename STS_RESTORE2

Operation completed successfully.

C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator>"c:\program files\common
files\microsoft
shared\web server extensions\60\bin\stsadm.exe" -o restore -url
http://companyw
eb/sites/restore2 -filename "d:\shareptbackup\restoreweb.bak" -overwrite

Cannot complete this function.

When I go to the restore site the message on the page is The Web site that
is referenced here is not in the configuration database. The only thing I
can possible see is that I cannot manage the front page extensions. When I
go to share point administrator and click on the companyweb the page cannot
be found and it’s not in iis. I already have the latest version 6.0.2.6411.
I have searched the knowledge base and made sure the timer service is
running. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Shannon,

Thanks for posting here.

For you description, I understand that you have suffered a restore issue.
if I am off base, please don't hesitate to let me know.

Based on my research, it''s a SBS 2003 WSS disaster recovery issue. I think
you could refer to the following article to perform a disaster recover for
Companyweb.

For your convenience, I would like to show you the detail steps to
implement a WSS disaster recovery:

Prerequisites
==================
These steps must be used when you cannot restore the System State on the
original server from Backup. For these steps to work it requires that new

the database and log files was performed. The required database and logs
files are listed below:
- STS_Config.mdb
- STS_Config_log.mdf
- STS_Servername_1.mdf
- STS_Servername_1_log.ldf

Before you can start the restore of the SharePoint Services databases, all
of the critieria below must be met:

- You must have Small Business Server 2003 (SBS 2003) with the Intranet
component installed.
- the SharePoint Services CompanyWeb must be working with a new, unmodified
database.
- The SharePoint Services CompanyWeb Web site must be accessible
(http://companyweb).

d. STS_Servername_1_log.ldf

Note: Do not restore any other default files such as master.mdf or model.mdf

Thank you for the response. I have looked at those kb articles and do not
think they are relevant because I do not want to restore the default
databases. I do not want to overwrite the current company web. I just want
to create a duplicate companyweb on a restore site so I can restore a few
deleted files to the current company web. I have followed the instructions I
posted and getting an error. The restore database is there but it does not
look like the site was created. Even though the command prompt operation
said it completed successfully. Please let me know if I am missing
something. Thanks Shannon

Hi Shannon,

Thanks for you update.

I am sorry for the delayed response due to weekend. Please understand that

Well no luck restoring the database. I am getting an error
"BackupDiskFile::OpenMedia: Backup device 'D:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL
Server\MSSQL$SHAREPOINT\BACKUP\STS_HERMES_1_00__d36fd566_b96b_4bd2_8bd6_6f1f144194a6_'
failed to open. Operating system error = 2(The system cannot find the file
specified.)."
It gives me a list of dates to choose from in the first backup to restore.
I get the error when I pick any of them. I noticed that the folder it is
looking in for these files is empty. How can that be if its seeing options
to restore? I did a search for
STS_HERMES_1_00__d36fd566_b96b_4bd2_8bd6_6f1f144194a6 with no luck. Where
else could these files be???

If I am SOL how can I prevent this in the future??? Something is obviously
out of whack.. Please Advice

Hi Shannon,

Thanks for you update.

For your now situation, the issue should be caused by incorrect backup set.
I suggest you use RESTORE VERIFYONLY to verify if the backup media is
correct. If the backup media is corrupted, you will not restore those files.
For avoiding the issue, I suggest that you always run RESTORE VERIFYONLY to
verify the backup when you completed backup task. In this way you can ensure
the back set is complete and you will not encounter this issue. Additionally
I suggest you set a resonable backup strategy to promote system security.

RESTORE VERIFYONLY

Verifies the backup but does not restore the backup. Checks to see that the
backup set is complete and that all volumes are readable. However, RESTORE
VERIFYONLY does not attempt to verify the structure of the data contained in
the backup volumes. If the backup is valid, Microsoft? SQL Server? 2000
returns the message: "The backup set is valid."

Syntax

RESTORE VERIFYONLY

FROM < backup_device > [ ,...n ]

[ WITH

[ FILE = file_number ]

[ [ , ] { NOUNLOAD | UNLOAD } ]

[ [ , ] LOADHISTORY ]

[ [ , ] PASSWORD = { password | @password_variable } ]

[ [ , ] MEDIAPASSWORD = { mediapassword | @mediapassword_variable } ]

[ [ , ] { NOREWIND | REWIND } ]

]

< backup_device > ::=

{

{ 'logical_backup_device_name' | @logical_backup_device_name_var }

| { DISK | TAPE } =

{ 'physical_backup_device_name' |
@physical_backup_device_name_var }

}

If you have any further concern or question about the issue, please don't
