Wins > msbrowse >tombstoned ??

I run one server that uses active directories. This server does not do
dhcp. A router does that. I run WINS. In the wins program I see a line
that says
--MSBROWSE__-- [01A]other
192.168.1.120 Tombstoned 192.168.1.120

The server is .120 . Now I dont know that much about wins or
tombtoning, but my understanding is that basically its a way to keep
track of netbios names with ip's. In an environment where the server
is not the dhcp this I think is particularly important. I know that
its a hold over from NT and that its old technology, but inmy
environment where the network is flakie and Im spread over seveal
buildings its an attempt to resolve issues. Many times I still cant
find machines on the network and sometimes they dont pick up ip's or
other ip's needed to work eg dns. AAAAnyway, my question is MSBROWSE i
think is used to find network machines out there on my network and if
its tombstoned, what does that mean? Is it normal and should I right
click on it and delete this record ?

WINS records that are flagged as tombstoned remain in the WINS database and
are replicated to any other WINS servers as part of replication cycle. After
the Extinction Interval has passed, the tombstoned records are marked extinct
and are cleared from the database by a scavenging operation which occurs
every Verification Interval. Queries for tombstoned records are ignored.
Tombstoning is the method to insure database consistency in a WINS replicated
environment.

thanks I had read the one article but had not found the other, thanks.

I suppose really tombstoning means little on domain with one server.
If you delete it or not, seems to be what Im understanding.

Shouldnt there be another record in the list of wins objects for
msbrowser that is active ?? I guess my thinking is if one is dead
there should be another that is alive?

And by the way what is the benifit of setting up a static record in
wins ??
