we are using win2000 server, mean time i have configured
win2003 server. i want to migrate only "computers" in the
AD. i keep the win2003 server on seperate network because
both servers having the same domain name. can i link both
on the same network. if it is possible how do i migrate
the same from old to new server. or shall i change the
domain name.

Why i gave the same name for new server, all client
machines are to be registered newly.

kindly suggest. a fast response would be appreciated.

Hello,

Thanks for your posting here.

I think you cannot put the two domains in the same network since they use
same domain name. As for your scenario, it will be better that you perform
In-Place Upgrade.

First, we can install the new server with the Windows 2000 and join the
exist Windows 2000 domain. Promote it to be the domain controller by
running the dcpromo. Then, perform the steps in the following article to
migrate the FSMO to the new server.

Now please install Windows Server 2003 on the new DC.

The following KB article contains good information on how to add new
Windows Server 2003 domain controllers to Windows 2000 domains:

For more information about how to upgrade Windows 2000 domains to Windows
Server 2003, visit the following Microsoft Web site:

Wish the information helps.
