Configuring our first Windows Server 2008 R2 x64 and need a SCSI controller.
We sourced the typical card we use - an LSI Logic LSI20160 PCI controller,
which works great in our other Server 2008 x64 server (driver built into
OS).

Sure enough, the R2 server does not seem to have a driver for this card. I
contacted LSI and they indicated they did not plan on furthering driver
support for this card, and said if it's not built into the OS there is no
driver - even though this card is still sold through distribution.

Is this common - that 2K8 R2 lacks drivers that 2K8 has built-in? Do I have
any alternate way of getting this card working?

Can anyone recommend a 68-pin Ultra 160 or greater SCSI card compatible with
2K8 R2 x64?

Thanks

Thanks for the reply. So, is the driver model that different with R2? Is
this typical?

I sure wouldn't think so.

Did you download and burn an ISO? If so there may be some corruption so I'd
try another download.

No, this is an install right off of OEM media.

Is there a way to extract a driver off of a non-R2 media or installation to
try on R2?

I ended up cheating and pulling the .inf, .sys, and .pnf files off of a
working 2008 non-R2 x64 install and loading the driver onto the R2 x64
install. Despite a warning about an unsigned driver, the driver loaded and
it seems to be working fine.

Note that the card wasn't even listed (that I can find) on that
WindowsServerCatalog site as compatible with 2K8, though Microsoft included
the driver with the non-R2 OS.

It was probably the OEM that added it. Good idea.

I am also trying to get the LSI card to work in 2008 R2. I tried finding the
driver on the non-R2 disk without luck.

Could you tell me what OEM media you are using? Or, if I could be so bold as
to ask for the drivers, I'd really appreciate it.

You might also try booting the Dell OpenManage Server Assistant Media

@Kremlar

Thanks for the info. I also managed to pull the files from a 2008 x64 server
and install them on a 2008 R2 x64 one.

For the benefit of others I have upload this along with the other "legacy"
LSI drivers.

Details from the INF files:
SYM_HI.INF
DevDesc2 = "LSI Logic 22910, 21002 PCI SCSI Adapter; 53C896 Device"
DevDesc3 = "LSI Logic 8953U PCI SCSI Adapter; 53C895A Device"

SYMC8XX.INF
DevDesc5 = "LSI Logic 8600SP PCI SCSI Adapter; 53C860 Device"
DevDesc6 = "LSI Logic 8951U, 8952U PCI SCSI Adapter; 53C895 Device"
DevDesc8 = "LSI Logic 875XS|D, 2280X PCI SCSI Adapter; 53C875, 53C876 Device"

SYM_U3.INF
DevDesc1 = "LSI Logic Ultra160 PCI SCSI Adapter; 53C1010-33 Device"
DevDesc2 = "LSI Logic Ultra160 PCI SCSI Adapter; 53C1010-66 Device"
