Is it possible for a DHCP client to select which DHCP
server and/or scope they should receive an IP address and
other options from.
I have a single DHCP server (2003) with 2 scopes,
connected to a single physical network. I need the PCs on
the network to obtain their IP address and options from
one scope, and the IP phones, on the same phisical
network, to get their IP address and options from a second
scope.
I suspect I need to use 'user classes' but I'm not sure
how.
Can anyone help?
Thanks
Rich

You are correct, this is a classic case for user class options. See:

You may also be able to use the built-in Vendor class for Win2k machines.

Thanks for the info, however it has occurred to me that
the PC's are running a mixture of Windows versions from 95
to XP. Will this cause a problem?

Dear Doug, dear Rich

We have a similar problem: We need to set up our DHCP-Server that it
gives IP adresses from Scope 1 to our 'normal' computers and adresses
from Scope 2 to our thin clients. I was trying to follow Q240247 but
was not able to find out how where i can define which scope is
responsible for which user class. I was able to configure the options
of the scopes (router, timeserver, ...) regarding on the class but
this doesn't help me as i need to be able to define which scope gives
the adress to the client. Sorry for my english but i hope you know
what i mean :-)

I want that if a device with user class XY is asking for an address,
the DHCP-Server is taking the address out of the scope 2 and for all
other user classes from scope 1. The important thing is the address,
not the options, as we would like to setup rules in our firewall based
on the address and therefore we would like to be able to control from
which scope the addresses are taken from.

Would you please tell me what i am missing ?

Thank you very much for your help.

PS : Windows Server 2003
