I had a similar problem and removing the updated detailed in KB896422
resolved the issue however after doing updates this weekend I started
recieving it again as follows:
Type: Error
Soucre: Srv
Event ID: 2000
Description:The server's call to a system service failed unexpectedly.
Data(Words):
0000: 00040000 00540001 00000000 c00007d0
0010: 00000000 c00000bb 00000000 00000000
0020: 00000000 00000000 04c20337

This event posts every 1-5 seconds. The only symptoms I have seen, were
some user browser issues, problems access an Access db over the network and
when attempting to download a large file (1GB+) from the server it fails
everytime at the same spot (transfer). Although I cannot directly attribute
this to the event I am havin, these issues did not exist before download and
installing the following updates this weekend:
KB917159 http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=917159
KB914388 http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=914388
KB917537 http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=917537

The server having the issue is a Domain Controller of two DC for the network
with 4 member servers. It is running Windows Server 2003 Standard SP1,
v.1289.

Now, one of the member servers has the KB896422 update on it and I am going
to remove it as soon as there is downtime. I am also going to remove the
recently installed updates.

But, until then, has anyone seen anything like this or come across similar
issues?
Any help or direction is much appreciated and please let me know if there is
some more information needed.

TIA
Phil

This solution is for Windows NT 3.51 and we use Windows Server 2003. Also
the are no installed printers on this server to print to.

Hi Phil,

I am haviing exactly the same problem as you (earlier and then removing
896422) and applied MS updates last night and it has come back. Played
havoc with one server that runs a foxpro app - people connecting were
getting thrown out and seem to be having probs on another server access
databases. On the first server I uninstall all the patches that were
installed last night just to let people in (we're a medical clinic and
that's our patient db). IF I find anything further I'll post back - and I
will check back regularly just in case yourself or others find a solution.

Cheers, Stephen

Hi All,

I came across this while searching...

Kb914388 WSUS Security update for Microsoft Windows. Replaces kb896422

That may explain why a similar problem exists when this patch is applied. I
have uninstalled this but it require a reboot to fully uninstall. Seeing it
our our main server that is still affected I may wait untill this evening
for the reboot. HOPEFULLY this is the answer - if anyone else knows any
further info - PL:EASE POST!!!!

...And sorry for the poor typing in the last post - my fingers don't work as
fast as my brain!!!!

Cheers,

Stephen

Hi again,

After more searching I found this information...
"KB917159 Hotfix. Replaces KB896422 Hotfix"
I have uninstalled this but it too requires a restart to be fully
uninstalled. I have decided to do a reboot at luchtime instead of waiting
for this evening. Will post back if things have been fixed.

Cheers, Stephen

I am wary of speaking too soon.......... but removing both KB914388 and
KB917159 appears to have fixed the problem!!! Which one it was - I'm not
entirely sure. And with the servers working - I'm not going to reapply each
to find out. I'll leave that to others to remove separately and see - and
hopefully post here so everybody will know. I hope this helps others in
similar circumstances.

Cheers, Stephen

This is great info, thanks! However I went ahead and removed all the updates
I applied just before the incident occured. The three I posted earlier, this
will help us narrow down the search for the culprit because the only other
update I had applied was KB917537 which has to do with ASP/IIS so I don't
think that is it. It has to be either of the two you mention or both of them
together.

Thanks for your replies.

I am having this problem as well, I have removed all three of those
patches and continue to get ID 2000 errors. I have about 35 servers
that are just locking up with this error intermittantly, mostly 2000
some 2003. any help would be greatly appreciated.
