Hi all,

We're migrating over to a Windows 2003 domain, and I've been having to
manually create entries for our Linux boxes in the DNS.

I've been adding these to the root of the domain (under Forest lookup zones)
as Hosts (A). Is this the best place to put them?

Any help would be great. Thanks!

That's pretty normal.

Well, the ONLY PROPER place to put them is in the ZONE where
they belong.

If a machine is part of the root domain/zone (in the minds of the
admin) OR needs to be resolvable in another domain/zone then
it needs to appear there.

For Windows machines, being in an AD Domain is part of the
identity of the machine (it actually has an account and authenticates)
but for Unix machines and for general purposes (e.g., web servers)
the name can and may be in multiple or arbitrary zones.

Arbitrary here means wherever the Admins want it to appear or
where they expect the users to seek it out.

Domain membership is not (usually) an issue for Unix machines,
but contacting those machines by appropriate full DNS names
probably is important -- that's the zone(s) where the name
much appear (for all practical purposes.)

Hi

Thats the right place to add the host records, if you need to resolve from ip
address to name of host (reverse lookup), as opposed to the usual name to IP
of host(forward lookup) you will need to create the appropriate PTR record
pointing IP to name.
