Hi,

My goal is to replace our current DNS server and Domain Controller both of
which are running in one box on a Winbdows 2000 server.

The replacement server will be running Windows 2003 and would like to set up
as a domain controller and a DNS server---all in one box.

Before I "DCPROMO", i verified that the intended replacement server is a
member of the domain controller and that it's DNS ip points to the primary
(Existing) DNS server.

What i have tried:

1) I have promoted this replacement server in our domain by selecting
"Additional Domain Controller".---went smoothly

2) I changed the setting in the primary DNS server to update dynamically.
After the DCPROMO was completed, i noticed that the Active Directory
was created and that all users were successfully replicated from the primary
Domain Controller which is also a primary DNS server. Good sign. However...

3) I tried to add a user but i got the following error message:
"Windows cannot verify that the user name is unique because the
following error occurred while contacting the global catalog: The server is
not operational

Windows will create this user account, but the user can log on only after
the username is verified to be unique. Make sure that global catalog is
available. ..."

4) I went ahead and 'checked' the replacement server to be a Global
Catalog server and 'unchecked' the Global Catalog on the existing server but
still didn't works.

Questions:
?)How long would the replication take?

?)When I tried to install the DNS service on the replacement server, i was
prompted with the "Connecting to DNS server" Windows with the following
options...

The Windows DNS server is running on:
*This computer
*The following Computer

I selected this computer but then it says Cannot Contact the DNS server.

?)What did i do wrong?
?)What else or how would i configure the secondary DNS server?
?)Why was i not able to create or add a new username onto this replacement
server?

Any help on this would be much appreciated.

Exo <E...@discussions.microsoft.com> made a post then I commented below

As long as you installed DNS, and only set the DNS addresses in IP
properties to itself and it's partner DNS, (please DO NOT use an ISP's DNS
in IP properties), then it should all work. This is considering you properly
set the Primary DNS Suffix prior to promotion, and the AD DNS domain name is
not a single label name.

If you can post an unedited ipconfig /all, and let us know what the AD
domain name is, so we can see your actual configuration, it will assist in
making a more accurate diagnosis.
