In looking at the DNS for the new domain, I see something strange. I
know that the _msdcs.company.com domain in W2K3 has been promoted in
some way to aid in AD replication. So when I look in the
"top-level"_msdcs.company.com zone, I see this:
_msdcs.company.com -> dc -> _sites -> (all three sites are listed)
But there's also a _msdcs subdomain of my company.com AD domain:
company.com -> _msdcs -> dc -> _site -> (only one site is listed)
The site that's listed in the second copy of _msdcs is the one that
clients at my soon-to-be-migrated site are choosing. And they're
choosing that because the clients are using a secondary copy of the
company.com domain off of a domain controller/DNS server from the
soon-to-be-decommed legacy domain (legacy.com). That is to say, the
secondary copy of company.com that's getting replicated to the
legacy.com domain is the second incomplete zone, not the first one that
has all of the records.
So presumably this will go away once I cut the users over to use the
new DNS server, new DHCP server, etc.
But I'm wondering why the two zones (which have the same name) are
different, and how I can clean this up.
If this is Win2k3 and the zones were set up by dcpromo, this subdomain is
actually a delegation and should contain only NS records for all DNS servers
running on Win2k3 DCs in the Active Directory Forest that have the
_msdcs.company.com zone replicated to them.
