Our team is in the process of redesigning the entire DNS/WINS server
environment - this is being done in a "staggered approach".

We acquired a list of all domain controllers & member servers which we'll
change the DNS/WINS properties to the new DNS/WINS servers which are in the
environment.

Before we retire the old name servers, we wanted to monitor any "stragglers"
which are still using the name servers to be retired.

How can we setup something to monitor DNS/WINS requests (by hostname) on
theses soon to be retired servers.

I looked at performance monitor, but it only gives the number of DNS/WINS
queries, not the hostname of the requestor. Does the netstat or some 3rd
party utility have the capability?

Thank You

You're best bet is to start examining the packets.

www.ethereal.com has a free utility.

I actually figured out if you turn on DNS debug logging for incoming queries
(on the DNS servers being retired) will do the trick.

Seems using a protocol analyzer could be overkill.
