Hello,

My question has to do with DNS and MX records. I hope I am in the correct
place to post?

This is a little long winded so please bear with me.

As I have always known it most MX records you see when querrying a DNS report
such as DNSreport.com and mxtoolbox.com you get a return on a domain such as
this. mail.somedomain.com or MX01.somedomain.com.

However I am unsure how this get's done because my mx records are only the
domain name with no prefix. Also they were at one time with another DNS
server.(prefixed) But I used their DNS managing software.

I tried to add this prefix as mentioned above however I get complaints about
a CNAME not being allowed in the mx record according to dnsreport.com.

I must inform I have never had a problem with mail and I have two mail
servers.
complete with SPF,PTR and Domain Key records.

If I can recall my last set of DNS servers I was able to set them to
mail.somedomain.com. But Godaddy (which is my registrar and DNS manager and
servers) might be the issue here?

My problem (if any) is how to get the MX record into what appears to be the
correct syntax?

maybe someone chould shed some light on this?

Happy Thanksgiving!

Thanks so much
Joe

This is not a terrible place to ask DNS question, although sometimes
there are better places for things not directly part of Windows issues....

It usually works better to start with the problem AND THEN
get long winded....

Your MX records should map your DOMAIN name (what does on your
email) address to your email SERVER NAME (where you want the
email to be sent.)

The MX should map to (resolve) to an A (Host) record, not to a CNAME.

That's odd if you don't have MX records down yet. (Not a criticism,
but you show some experience and talent if you can configure those
other more complicated records.)

No. The issue is getting your domain MX to resolve to an A (host) address
record. Godaddy or MS DNS or pretty much ANY DNS can do that.

It's really trivial at GoDaddy since you just fill out the form.

Hello Herb

Thank you for your reply

I have corrected the problem and thank you for your compliment on the talent.

I have PTR's and SPF's on my domain for over a year now I just added the
domain Keys I also post help in the
SMTP news groups.

I have always unserstood mailservers better that any ohter IT technology and
DNS in this capacity was not a problem either.

As for Godaddy I know about filling out the form actually that was the issue.
(trivial) is correct!

The form defaults are all CNAMES and leave only the '@' in the A record.
So when asking the Godaddy Tech support they were not sure of how to setup
their form inmy case. Which I think wasn't any different than any other.

I deleted all the CNAMES and was now able to add A records accordingly

The MX now is in proper syntax and priority

Herb Thank you very much you have helped me in the past and today too
