have a question about DNS. I installed DNS on a windows 2003 server.
It is not integrated with AD yet. I have DNS data backed up on a CD.
Can we import this into DNS? How do I do that? Or Do I have to
reinstall DNS again? However I have backup only on CD.

Please answer. Thank you for your time.

Was this backed up from Win2k3?
Did you back up the registry, too?

If yes to both, copy the zone files to the %systemroot%\system32\dns
directory then just import the registry entries.

If all you backed up was the zone files, copy the zone files as per above,
then recreate the zones getting data from the existing zone files.

If you used DNSDump from www.reskit.net/scripts it is just a matter of
running dnsdump.cmd import CDdriveletter:\directory

Thank you. I copied the DNS file. It worked. But is it not integrating
with the DNS server in AD domain. I am not able to get data into AD
domain DNS. Please let me know if you know how to do it.

If the AD domain name is the same as the zone data you are wanting to
import, you cannot really import the data.
What you can do is use the zone file to create your zone, then change the
zone to AD integrated and allow dynamic updates. be aware, do this only on
one server, do not manually add the zone in AD on another server. This could
cause the zone data to be over written. If you will wait, the zone should
replicate.

Backup you SYSTEM STATE data instead.

This includes enough to get a computer running again, and if
it is a DNS server the DNS data is included.

If it is a DC then AD and Sysvol are also included in System
State and that is a good thing too.

You may alternatively make an ASR (Automatic System Recovery)
backup which is a superset of System State.

That is if this Windows 2003 server is actually a domain controller. I
didn't see anywhere stating such in the original post. If not a DC, then AD
Integration won't be an option.
