Wondering what I need to know in or do in order to setup a secondary DNS
server. We have a primary server at one location right now and decided
that we wanted a secondary dns server in another city.

Both servers are Windows Server 2003.

I have setup a lot of DNS servers in the past, but I've never set up a
secondary server or one at a remote location.

Any input would be appreciated. Thanks.

Suggest you make it a DC in an AD site. AD sites are defined by subnets. You
DHCP server will hand out IPs for the remote AD site.

Setting up a secondary server at a remote location can be easy, but we would
need to know more about your infrastructure, like if Active Directory is in
use, and if this is an internal zone for an Active Directory domain.

No.. it's not an Active Directory structure.

Then it is just a simple matter of allowing zone transfers from the Primary
to the Secondary server, which is done on the Zone Transfers tab of the
Primary zone. Keep in mind zone transfers are configured at the individual
zone level because many servers can have multiple zones, transferring to
many different Secondary servers.
Once you have allowed zone transfers, make sure you have a firewall rule in
place that opens port 53 UDP _and_ TCP inbound to the Primary. Then you can
create your Secondary zone on the secondary server and the zone should
transfer.
