Failback to primary DNS-Server?

Hello!

I'd like to ask you, if there is a failback-mechanism in the DNS-client
service to use the primary DNS-server again. For example, I use 10.0.0.1
as primary DNS-server and 10.0.0.2 as secondary DNS-server. 10.0.0.1 is
offline when a client tries to resolve a record. Let's say, that
10.0.0.2 is able to resolve that record. Later, the 10.0.0.1 is back
online, but the client (Windows XP) is still using 10.0.0.2.

Are there some time-thresholds to failback? Where can I see, which
server the DNS-client is actually using? Are there any differences
between the MS operations systems?

Thanks so much!

Greetings,
Jose

Hello Jose,

If the primary does not react in specific time it switches to secondary.
Have a look here:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc779517.aspx

If DNS server list is reprioritized, the DNS Client service resets the server
priority at periodic intervals. By default, the server priorities are reset
every 15 minutes.
For XP see here also:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/320760/en-us

You can use nslookup for the used server and lot of other queries:
