Greetings:
Im using windows server 2003

In my primary server, I install DNS, IIS and also a mail server (groupwise7).
And now its working properly. Right now I want to have a secondary. My
questions are:

1. Should the primary and secondary servers will have the same computer name
and primary dns suffix?
2. If I create a forward and reverse lookup zone in my secondary server, Do i
need to create Host (A), MX. and etc?
3. What are other things that I need to know before proceeding to a secondary
server?

Thanks for your time.God bless

They certainly shouldn't have the same name, there are other factors in
involved with the Primary DNS suffix name that depend on the environment to
computer runs in. However, by default when a Windows Server has DNS, it will
use its host name plus the Primary DNS suffix when it creates its own NS
records. Except for Active Directory integrated zones, the Computer's fully
qualified name does not have to match the DNS server's NS record names.

I think you've confused an Alternate DNS server with a Secondary zone. DNS
servers can have either Primary or Secondary zones, or they can have both
primary and secondary zones, just not for the same domain name.

If you are wanting to add a Secondary zone to an Alternate DNS server, you
would not and could not create any records on the secondary zone because it
is a read only copy of a primary zone and all records are created on the
primary and transferred to the secondary. When you create a secondary zone,
it will load the zone data from its primary, if you allow zone transfers
from the primary to the secondary's IP address. You may want to add an NS
record with the DNS server's name and IP that is going to have the Secondary
zone.

Is this Active Directory with ADI zones on DCs?
If yes, the primary is an ADI zone and installed on a DC, at the very least,
all domain controllers in the domain with DNS installed will get the ADI
zone and cannot have a secondary of the ADI zone on another DC in its
domain.
