I have recently taken over responsibility for a win 2000 server domain,
with 25 sites, but only one DNS server at HQ. The existing DNS server is not
AD integrated, and is running on a non domain controller.
I want to move the DNS service to a domain controller to make it AD
integrated, to avoid single point of failiure, and to implement DNS servers
in the organisations branch offices (sites).
What would be the smartest way to do this. Is it possible to keep / import
the existing zone to an AD integrated solution ?
Kind regards
Mikael Mørup
Configure the new DNS as a secondary to your existing DNS and allow the zone
to transfer.
Configure all DNS clients to point to the new DNS server. If this means
changing the DHCP scopes or manually configuring the resolvers, do it.
Change the new DNS zone from Secondary to Primary Integrated.
Add additional Integrated DNS servers to flavour.

Now i just have to change the preferred DNS server in 25 DHCP scopes, -
well what are weekends for anyway ;-)

If you do it by changing the scopes, do not forget to wait
sufficiently long for all clients to have released their IPs.
Alternatively it is sometimes feasible to just move the IP
from the old to the new DNS server, and then tweak the
definition of the master on the secondary transfer (or make
the change to it being primary).
