What do the icons in DNS manager mean?

A sheet? Can you elaborate?
A gray folder usually means a delegation.
A folder is a zone. Can be a child zone too, nontheless, a zone.

A normal folder icon with another graphical element infront of it (and I
don't mean to the left of it but partly covering it) that looks like a piece
of paper with lines and a foldet top left corner.
This is the dnsmgmt console in Windows Server 2003 by the way, it might be
different in 2000, but I have no other server to check it on.
The normal folder icon is in front of Cached Lookups, Foreard Lookup Zones,
Reverse Lookup Zones. The folder + paper sheet icon is infront of all the
reverse lookup zones inside Reverse Lookup Zones, infront of the .(root)
under Cached Lookups and our own domain folder. (Lets call it ourdomain.com
for this discussion).
The _sites, _tcp, _udp folders are without the paper sheet icon.

The gray folder is _msdcs inside the ourdomain.com. That one only has a NS
entry.
There also exist a forward zone called _msdcs.ourdomain.com. and I guess
that is equivalent, but it doesn't look like that in the examples I used. I
thought I only would see one forward zone, ourdomain.com.

Is there anywhere something like the "Understanding the DHCP Console Icons"
document (see

I would say (don't have a W2k3 in front of me) that the "paper sheet icon"
means that this holds A, CNAMES and other DNS records in that folder, such
as your zone and is not a delegated zone. This is normal.

In W2k3 with AD, (new feature), that is the forest _msdcs folder that has a
reference to the forest root that gets replicated to other DNS servers so
they know where the forest root is. If it has an NS entry, that's indicative
of a delegation. I assume the NS entry is your DNS server itself in this
instance.
