hello this is a test situation. I have a domain controller running
server 2008 standard named nwtraders.msft and I have added another DC pc
and installed a sub domain on it named marketing.nwtraders.msft also
running server 2008. So the domain controller is nwtraders.msft and the
sub domain is west.nwtraders.msft Also on the domain controller I have
done the domain delegation pointing to the pc which has the west
subdomain installed and till there everything seems to be ok.

The problem is that when I am trying to join a pc to the
west.nwtraders.msft with the same pc set to the west.nwtraders.msft dns
number it gives me this error:

Note: This information is intended for a network administrator. If you
are not your network's administrator, notify the administrator that you
received this information, which has been recorded in the file
C:\Windows\debug\dcdiag.txt.

DNS was successfully queried for the service location (SRV) resource
record used to locate an Active Directory Domain Controller for domain
marketing.nwtraders.msft:

The query was for the SRV record for
_ldap._tcp.dc._msdcs.marketing.nwtraders.msft

The following AD DCs were identified by the query:

tosh-win2008-std.marketing.nwtraders.msft

Common causes of this error include:

- Host (A) records that map the name of the AD DCs to its IP addresses
are missing or contain incorrect addresses.

- Active Directory Domain Controllers registered in DNS are not
connected to the network or are not running.

For information about correcting this problem, click Help.

I am doing something wrong and if yes pls explain thank you

Hello aconti,

To get your situation correct:
1 DC in in the domain nwtraders.msft with computername ???????? and another
DC in the domain west.nwtraders.msft with comutername MARKETING?

Did you configure MARKETING as DNS server with the forward lookup zone west.nwtraders.msft
and is marketing registered with it's A record and Name server record?

Please post an unedited ipconfig all form MARKETING and the computer your
try to join.

Best regards

thank you for your reply, I will post your request in a moment but pls
before can you tell me which option I have to choose if I want to create
a sub domain whan I run the dcpromo so that clients will be able to
connect to the subdomain. After when ready I have to create a zone
delegation of the sub domain from the main DC right ?

so which option New domain in an existing forest or it is not correct
?

My goal is to create another DC which will host the marketing sub
domain so that some of the hosts will join the marketing.nwtraders.msft
zone but be also able to communicate with the nwtraders.msft hosts on
the other DC and the internet.

if you can tell me the correct steps to create the additional marketing
DC and what settings I have to make on the nwtraders.msft DC so that it
is linked to the marketing DC it would be great.... thank you

Hi Aconti

The steps Meinolf provided are perfect for a new implementation. But if
these steps were not followed initially and the domain is already set, read
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb727007.aspx

This will enlighten you to the requirement for "Glue Records" when delgation
is in use.
