Hi,

We are planning to migrate our SQL-A (in AD) box to SQL-B (in AD) box, then
rename SQL-B to SQL-A in AD.

The proposed steps are:
remove SQL-A and SQL-B from AD
rename SQL-A to SQL-old
rename SQL-B to SQL-A
join SQL-A to AD

Could anyone please verify if the above steps are correct?
If so, is there anyway to verify or to check everything is OK as far as AD
concerns?

Thank you.

Coady,

This should work jsut fine. Make sure that you have backups that you know
are good of your databases. if you are working on a SAN, you might
disconnect the databases and reconnect them once you ahve done your server
shuffle.

When you remove the servers, make sure you force or allow time for the
removal of the machines from AD and the cleanup of the DNS records across all
DCs and sites. It is always good to verify this so you don't end up with
join errors or duplicate SPNs.

Hope this helps.

Hi,

Is there a place where I could find out how often AD does the cleanup?
Or, if I choose to force it, do I just delete the computer from AD?

Thank you

Coady,

You can use REPLMON to make sure that the directory is up to date and that
changes have replicated.

Otherwise, you'd want to make sure that the computer account is deleted and
that the DNS (forward and reverse) are gon from all DCs.
