I have a 2003 server, single scope. Any time I try to delete a reservation,
it corrupts, i.e. when I close the 'manage dhcp' and re-open, I get 'failed
to init snap-in' when I try to view the leases and/or reservations. If I
delete a reservation and flip between the reservations and leases they are
viewable but if I close the console and re-open 'manage dhcp' they fail. If
I restore the database all is well again except for my changes of course.
I've tried this with 3 different reservation deletions and they all
fail/corrupt the database upon re-opening. 'Reconcile' finds no problems
with the database at any time during this. I can add new reservations fine
and they don't cause this corruption. If it matters, the first time I click
on the leases to view them after a deletion(and restarting the mmc), the
slider bar shrinks as if it's populating the field but fails at the last
second and displays nothing.

the only one that stands out is dnsapi
event id 11160
"The system failed to register pointer (PTR) resource records(RRs) for
network adaptor with settings:
....

others looked normal, just start & stop of the service, sucessful restores
of the database. some 100% messages but that's because it's locked down,
reservation only, no free IPs.

not really sure what I should be looking for, the DHCP service activity log
shows no code 16's (lease deleted) just normal activity and matenience event
codes: 11,24,25,30,31,55

I can't just post my logs but if you know of a tell tale I should be looking
for?
also, end of my workday here, will continue TS tomorrow.

Another thing to look for is anti-virus software and the settings as well as
revisions of software. They are up to date correct?

yes, the av is managed by a different server and updates are verified with
Update Expert.

Not quite what I was after. I meant, the OS is up to date and the AV is not
configured with the proper exclusions. Is that correct?

sorry, I didn't really answer you well, I use Update Expert to make sure the
OS 'is' up to date. And the DHCP in question has it's AV setup as a client
of another AV server. It's norton, and nothing but the defs have been
changed so I'm not aware of any exclusions that could be causing problems to
start up.

I guess I could re-build if necessarry but I would need advice on how to
export the current data and script the rebuild so I wouldn't have to do it
all manually.

The local Norton client is configured to scan certain file types and file
directories. You would generally want to exclude database files and other
blob files that could look like a virus to an anti-virus application. Which
would then eat it. Or worse, corrupt it.

That would be a configuration issue on your part. Check with the Norton
support to find out if you need to have and if you have any special
exclusions in place for your configuration.
