Hi - I re-booted our Windows 2003 DC following the installation of windows
updates and the system will no longer start. The message is 'Directory
Services could not start because of the following error. a transaction
recover failed. Error status: 0XC0000227. Please click ok to shutdown this
system and reboot into directory services restore mode, check the event log
for more detailed information'. When I go into directory services restore
mode, an error relating to explorer.exe is displayed 'this application has
failed to start because OLEAUT32.dll was not found. re-installing the
application may fix this problem' . The screen is blank other than safe mode
in each corner (I'm unable to do anything else). Please can someone assist me
in getting the system back up an running asap. Regards

How many domain controllers do you have in the same domain and site? Do you
have a recent System State backup? Is the OS unresponsive in the DS Restore
Mode - or does the issue you described affects only GUI?

Hi,

If this issue is urgent, you seek for immediate technical assistance, you
can consider the Business Critical Phone Support services. More information
can be found :

https://partner.microsoft.com/US/supportsecurity/technicalsupport/phonesuppo
rt/businesscriticalTo

To continue working with me here, please see the following:

1. <The message is 'Directory Services could not start because of the

following error. a transaction recover failed. Error status: 0XC0000227.>

Typically, this behavior may occur for the following reasons:

o The Ntds.dit file in the system state backup is located in a different
location from the current configuration.

o The Current Configuration settings stored in the registry are incorrect,
invalid, or missing.

For how to troubleshoot this issue, please refer to:

Error message: "A transaction recover failed." Error status: 0xc0000227
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/311502/en-us

2. <The screen is blank other than safe mode in each corner (I'm unable to
do anything else).>

This symtop may occur due to the corruption of drivers or services. If you
choose 'last good configuraiton' option in advanced boot manual, what is
the result?

Do you have a full backup or system state back that you made prior to
installation of Windows update? If so, please restore system to the
original state using this backup.
To do so, you can refer to the following article:

How To Use the Backup Program to Back Up and Restore the System State in
Windows 2000

Hi - Thanks for your prompt response. I have managed to correct this issue by
copying file 'oleaut32.dll' from a w2k3 member server to the problematic
domain controller using the recovery console. Re-booted the DC and all seems
to be OK. I think a windows security update may not have installed correctly.
