Hello friends,

I know that we have plenty of threads on the web about w32time, but after
spending more than 3 days trying all the solutions I can't make it work...
why this have to be so hard to config...

On the client pc XP station I get the error on the w32time log:
ListeningThread -- no NTP service running at 192.168.1.12:123

192.168.1.12 is the server

On the server I keep getting this results on the log:
W32TimeHandler called: SERVICE_CONTROL_INTERROGATE
W32TmServiceMain: timeout
W32TmServiceMain: waiting 64.000s

I assume that the problem is only on the server, for some reason not acting
as an NTP server.

Here you have my registry config:

Hello drtduarte,

Is the server registry from the PDCEmulator? On the PDCEmulator this should
be "NTP" not "Nt5DS".

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\W32Time\Parameters

Valor 2

Nome: Type
Tipo: REG_SZ
Dados: Nt5DS

Hello Meinolf,

Thanks for your help.
Actually the registry is from one pc with xp not the server.
When you mean the PDCEmulator, you mean the server right?

The w32time setting on the server (win 2003 server small business) has NTP.

Regards,
David

David,

It sounds as though you used a third party solution, which is fine. However,
you should also know that Windows has its own time service. Also, the
Windows Time Service is tightly integrated with Active Directory. You can
read more about it here:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc773013.aspx.

As Meinolf mentioned, the Time service under Windows is intergrated with AD
and windows services. By Default, the domain controller that holds the PDC
Emulator Role is the time service for the domain. Also by default, ALL
machine in the domain will seek the domain controller holding the PDC
Emulator Role.

To configure the Time Service domain controller holding the PDC Emulator
Role, follow these steps to be only performed domain controller holding the
PDC Emulator Role:

net stop w32time
net time /setsntp:192.5.41.41
net start w32time

THis will set the time service to sync time with 192.5.41.41, a well known
US Naval time server on the internet. If you need a time service elsewhere,
here is a list:

A list of the Simple Network Time Protocol (SNTP) time servers that are
available on the Internet (US and International):
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/262680

There are no other registry changes, modifications, additions required, nor
any third party applications that need to be installed. It all works by
default, and it works nicely I may add.

When WS03 was first released, I saw some odd behavior when using net time to
configure the Windows Time service. After working with PSS, I found out that
there were issues with using net time (known to PSS) and the supported
method for WS03 and later was w32tm.exe. To this day, and years later, I
have yet to see anything documented from MS stating that the net time should
not be used.

Nonetheless, I recommend that you do not use net time, but instead use the
w32tm.exe command. More specifically, see the following KB:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc786897.aspx

Hello drtduarte via WinServerKB.com,

Yes, the PDCEmulator is your SBS, no other DC can have the FSMO roles when
SBS is used. The PDCemulator in a domain is always the time source and all
other DC's sync with that one automatically. Member servers and workstations
will use one available DC for time sync. This ensures that all machines in
a domain have the same time. If there are time sync problems make sure that
a firewall is not blocking NTP port 123 UDP.

So you should not configure the XP to use another time source then the SBS.
If they have a time difference over 5 minutes you will got domain internal
problems.

Personal i would configure the SBS to an external time source and reconfigure
the clients to use the SBS as domain time server.

PDCEmulator:

w32tm /config /manualpeerlist:peers /syncfromflags:manual /reliable:yes /update

With "peers" you can set the time source, either DNS name (time.windows.com)
or an ip address from a reliable time source.

Here you can find some of them:
http://www.pool.ntp.org/

Client configuration:
To configure a client computer for automatic domain time synchronization

w32tm /config /syncfromflags:domhier /update

After that run:
net stop w32time
net start w32time

Best regards

Hi J,

I didn't realize that. I haven't had any trouble in the past with using the
net time command. So based on the article, we can simply state the following
without going through the procedure I outlined?

w32tm /config /manualpeerlist:192.5.41.41 /syncfromflags:manual
/reliable:yes /update

Thanks,

Ace

Thank you all for the great help.

I was using net time commands, maybe that was the reason for having issues...
I will try your suggestions as soon as possible, right now all the network is
using the ntp server refered above, the clients get the time from the server,
and the server from an external source.

Regards,
David
