I have exchange 2003 installed on my main 2003 server and i have since added
two more DC's and have duplicated the global server on them, from what I have
read you can take off the global catalog service on the main one so the
others will share that responsibility, my question where I have installed
exchange 2003 on the main one will that be affected if I take off global
cataloging where people log into exchange for webmail, since the server has
to authenticate users logging into email on the webmail. thank you for any
help!

If you only have a single domain then ALL DCs should be GC since there is no
replication penalty to being a GC in a single domain.

Now that you have 3 DCs though I would recommend moving your FSMO roles to
the new DC and demoting your exchange server to be a member server.

Whoa. You may want to rethink that approach.

Exchange has some serious issues with demoting the dc underneath it.

On a three dc forest, I'd leave all dc's as gc's. There should not be too
much replication traffic as it is.

I would consider moving the fsmo roles as suggested, so that your fsmo roles
are not on the Exchange dc. I would also consider moving the Exchange
dc/server to it's own AD site so it is not expected to handle auth requests
as much.

Care to share some of the issues with the rest of us? Or do they need
remain amorphous?

Sorry Al. I just re-read my first reply and it had a touch of flame. I
just meant to ask for a couple of the reasons.

No worries. I take a while to catch up as it is and oddly enough, my delete
key and I are quite familiar. :)
Next time I'll try to take more time and provide some links though.
Regardless of how it's written it's good feedback.

thank you, I will transf the roles, so you are saying to leave it a gc on the
exchange server, my question then is if I have 3 dc's that are gc's who
answers the login authentication? Do all 3 take turns? and if so if I want
pc's to authenticate with a specific server first, can you do that? thanks
again for your help

They all take turns. The only way to prefer a specific DC is to put the
others in a different AD site, as Al said.
