Starting this morning, one of my clients reported they could not run their
applications at their XPPro clients. The apps run off their 2003 server std
ed. If they try to open the F: or G: network drives they get a message that
they are disconnected and cannot reconnect.

I tried to RDC to their server and my connection was refused, may be busy
try again later message.

I then had them attempt to log on the server and when they press
Ctrl-Alt-Del a message tells them that the net logon service is not running.

I had them restart the server (no choice but to use the power switch), same
problem. Had them restart again in safe mode w/network support, same problem.

My server received some Windows updates overnight and restarted with no
problems. Same version OS as theirs.

They are down. Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks

How can I view the event logs while unable to log on to the server?

It's as if someone disabled the 'net logon' service itself.

I have a test bench server that I am going to do just that in a few minutes
to see what happens and if so, how to overcome the issue.

Hey Greg, I would start by removing the updates one at a time..this has
worked for me in the past with problems stemming from updates....what are you
using to get ms updates ????

Thx
Steve

Hi all, again, thanks. Without being able to log in to the server, how can I
remove updates. Can't get to a desktop. Spent 3 hours on the phone with
Dell support and ended up re-installing the OS. It's a (relatively) small
account, 5-6 clients and 5-6 users. All data was on the D: partition. It's
still a mystery.

I loaded a test machine with server 2003 std ed on 10/16, then disabled the
net logon service. I was able to restart and logon normally. So much for
that idea.

One last thing, when booting from the OS install CD I either missed the
option for the recovery console or it wasn't offered. I had to load 3rd
party SCSI raid drivers and may have missed the recovery console option.
Anyway, it's pretty much behind me know.

I'm having the same issue on Windows XP 64. Like Greg:

I can't log in. I can't get an RPC or RDP connection.

Therefore:

I can't check logs - I can't get to services.

Last Known Good is NOT an option because I successfully reach MS GINA -
which *IS* the "last known good" in Window's terms...

I can't log in locally.

I can't log in as a domain user.

The error is that the netlogon service is not running.

If I try Safe Mode, the error is "the domain <machine name> is not
available>

Any ideas other that installing a new OS?

Thanks in advance.

Hello csocci,

Log in as local, ie computer user with local admin account and see if you
can manually restart netlogon service

Have you considered using Recovery Console or WinPE to get more insight into
the root cause of the problem (assuming that you have the local Admin
credentials)?

Thank you for the replies.

1. Since I can not log in (at all, local, domain or otherwise) I can
not start/stop services or do anything else inside the OS. No RPC
sessions, no RDP.

2. Yes, I did boot a recovery shell but I was unable to authenticate in
it or change the administrator password. I also tried Windows PE from
the UBCD.

I'm pretty sure the only option at this point would be to mount the
drive on another Windows box... Or install another instance of XP in
parallel to a new folder.

It is actually faster for me to build another XP install and manually
recreate the shares, etc... Fortunately none of that data is lost (and
is also doubly backed up locally and off site).

Cheers
