Hi,
I have vista ultimate running and i've been using wmc a lot. Everthing in
it was working perfect until I got up one morning and WMC was giving me a
decoder error while trying to watch live tv. I can't think of anything i've
changed and when trouble shooting, i've found that dvds work but recorded tv
and live tv don't work. (decoder error). I've reinstalled a new nvidea
mpeg 2 decoder but it didnt fix anything. I'm out of ideas. Can anyone
help? Could memory play a part in this? I have a gig of memory.

same exact thing for me Karl.

My girlfriend was watching tv, the machine froze / locked up completely and
would not respond. not even to keyboard or mouse input.

she turned it off and went to bed, when i woke up the next morning i did a
little troubleshooting, rebooted, same thing, re-installed another decoder
(windvd), same thing, checked problem reports and solutions, nothing listed,
checked system restore, which oddly enough, right about the time the system
froze it had created the one and only entry for a roll back (perhaps that is
what caused the problem?).

so i tried to restore back to that point which went fine, but nothing
changed, i still had the decoder error on recorded or live tv stating that
media center or the machine should be restarted.

odd, i got fed up and re-installed MCE 2005 XP again and it's working great,
i'm pretty disappointed i had to roll back, i really really enjoyed the new
features and layout of vista.

How about a little more info about your system? Componets, Driver Releases
etc.
For example if you are using an AMD CPU we would suggest that you might need
the latest XP X2 driver from the AMD WebSite. It will fix live tv and newly
recorded programs if it is the casue of your pproblem.

I have the same exact thing. My Vista WMC has been working since day 1. My
Vista was in the drawer for a couple of days. Magic? I have a removable
drawer which I use to swap between vista and xp. Anyway after reading 4-5
exact decoder error symptoms, I erased the HD and installed only Vista and my
drivers for my PVR 150 card(which works fine in xp). And the drivers for my
ATI 9550. Is there a bad fix which was downloaded recently from MS. Jason
HELP!!!

Good point, specs are necessary:

- intel celeron 2.93ghz
- 1gb ram
- msi mobo, i forget the chipset
- onboard via vinyl audio
- hauppage pvr 250mce

but i actually got my hands on the new pre-rc1 build which is working great
and MUCH improved people, performance has been improved, bug fixed, interface
is REALLY much more sexy (MCE specifically), fit and finish / polish is much
greater (Steve Jobs won't know what hit him), and other interface anoiyances
have been squared away.

Microsoft really listened to us, I'm really bloody impressed. For anyone
still running Beta 2, get the pre-RC1, it's awesome, truely awesome.

Sorry jW for the lack of info. I have an amd 3200, 1 gig of 3200 kingston
memory, radeon x800 pro, western digital 160 gig hd. I also have a
souudblasteer audigy 2 platium that i get to work in vista so i'm using the
generic buit in motherboard sound card. The motherboard is a MSI witt the
NVIDea chip. Is there any other questions? THanks for the AMD tip. I'm
going to try that now.

I don't think the AMD patch would work, I had the same problem as you with an
Intel Celery

I started getting a decoder error last week to. Sometime between
August 27 and the 29 (I'm pretty sure it was the 29th, since I seem to
recall watching a show I recorded on the 28th). I restored back to the
27th, and the problem continues. I'm wondering if there was a time
bomb in the codec for some reason. Anyone else know the date their
MPEG decoder stopped working?

My Encoder is still working (my shows are recording fine, and I can
watch them in Media Player Classic, although I can't
fastforward/rewind)

I'm using an NVideo7800GT along with an AMD 4400+, with the 64bit vista
beta 2.

There was a patch (to beta 2) a couple weeks ago to fix a problem
playing tv shows in RC1 recorded in Beta 2. That pre-dates my problem
by about a week, but it's about the only thing I can think of.

Mark, My Media Center died around the same date. I was recording some poker
shows to watch the following day, and I got decoder errors. Even installed
Vista 5384 again on a clean empty HD with only the TV drivers(I have
Hauppauge PVR-150 and Theater 550 Pro). Same thing. Something was either
timed or downloaded that caused the change. I did download the free trial
NVIDIA Pure Video Decorder and it worked. But something broke in Media
Center. Strange. Ooouuuuuuuu!
