Hi. I uninstalled Windows Messenger from MCE2005, then installed MSN
messenger. I noticed that Messenger services were not working in MCE
so removed it (it wasn't until after I removed it I found postings on
here saying MSN messenger is not supported).

Anyhow, I couldn't work out how to reinstall Windows Messenger, so
downloaded and installed the latest version of it from Microsoft.

I am now able to receive messasges, but am not able to send them. If I
type them in media center, they appear to be sent but they never appear
in the actual messenger window on my MCE pc and they never arrive at
the other end.

Anyone have any idea what could be causing this?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Ensure that you have the latest version of Windows Messenger installed.

It is available here
Microsoft Windows Messenger version 5.1.0700

According to this blog entry, people reported that going back to Windows
Messenger 4.7 did the trick.

If that's the case, I'd recommend Removing Windows Messenger 5.1 from
Add/Remove Programs as described in the blog entry, then get the last
version of Windows Messenger 4.7 here

http://download.microsoft.com/download/4/4/0/44035C82-FEFC-49BB-965F-A20DF645AD0B/mmssetup.exe

Let us know if that works.

Downgrading to 4.7 solved the problem. As there was no Add/Remove item
for Windows Messenger 5.1, I had to perform the following:

1) Download the Messenger 5.1 Windows Installer file from the Link
above
2) Download the Messenger 4.7 Installer from the link above
3) Run 'msiexec /x Messenger.msi' to uninstall 5.1
4) Run the Messenger 4.7 installer

Now, MSN works perfectly in Media Center. Thanks for all your help.

Interesting, I could have sworn Messenger 5.1 worked without issue on my MCE
2005 machine. In fact, I'm pretty sure I tested it with my brother prior to
going home for Christmas.

Yeah, it seems a bit backward to me too.. Having to go back to an older
version of Windows Messenger and such.
