I have had two failed attempts at upgrading my HP Vista 64-bit laptop. I am
OK with Vista, but I would really like the updated version of Media Center
that I have on my two Win7 desktop machines. Is there any way possible to
download and install just the Media Center upgrade without the Win7 install?

no. Media Center is integrated. you need an upgrade license for the laptop.

Have you tried a clean install rather than an upgrade?

You can not do an inplace upgrade from 32 bit Vista to a 65bit OS such as
Win7 64bit. If you are using a Windows 7 upgrade license you must do a
replacement upgrade of the 32 bit OS with a clean install of the 64 bit OS
into the partition containing the 32 bit OS.

The laptop is a 64 bit Vista and I received the upgrade kit from HP
(containing a valid Windows7 license). It seems to be a problem with some
of the drivers still not being available. I thought that the "use this disk
first" disk was supposed to take care of that, but it didn't. Both times
the installation backed out of it and said it failed.

Contact HP support it appears that there is something incorrect with the
instructions that they provided to you along with the Win7 disk(s).
