Media Center won't start. I double click the shortcut, and it does a short
hourglass, and then nothing. No error messages, nothing... It was working
yesterday, and that was when I added a new extender (xbox 360). I've
rebooted, and tried turning on/off the extender to see if that made a
difference, but it won't start, and doesn't give me any clues why not. I'm
running Vista Home Premium. Can I re-install Media Center somehow? Any
suggestions?

Thanks,
Mark

You may try System Restore.

Thanks for the idea. Unfortunately, I had 'System Protection' turned off,
so don't have any restore points. I have the Vista DVD that came with my
computer. Can I re-install only Media Center using that somehow? I
couldn't find a way to remove/add it under "Control Panel / Programs and
Features".

Thanks,
Mark

Try this:-

In the Start Search box type in:-

%SystemRoot%\ehome\ehshell.exe and press the Enter Key.

Does it launch Media Center?

If it does then create a shortcut of the same.

Hi S. Sengupta,

Thanks, but that didn't start Media Center. As soon as I hit Enter the
start menu went away, but nothing started, no error messages, or anything.

I also tried starting it from a command line, in case that were to show any
error messages, but it doesn't. It just returns the prompt. Here is what I
ran in the command window:

C:\Users\Mark>cd c:\windows\ehome

c:\Windows\ehome>ehshell.exe

c:\Windows\ehome>

I also tried looking in the event log, at: "Computer Management / System
Tools / Event Viewer / Applications and Services Logs / Media Center".
There are some informational events from yesterday, but nothing shows up for
today. So, starting ehshell.exe now doesn't cause anything to be put in the
event log.

Also, I have a file: C:\Windows\ehome\ehshell.crash that was last modified
yesterday (before I started today), and it contains:

Unhandled Exception - 09/13/2008 22:51:48
Message: Method not found: 'IntPtr System.Diagnostics.Process.d()'.
Exception:
System.MissingMethodException: Method not found: 'IntPtr

at ServiceBus.UIFramework.UserControlPoint.Launch(String args)
at
Microsoft.MediaCenter.Internal.LaunchMediaCenter.LaunchMediaCenterHelper()

Additionally, I've looked at the running processes in Task Manager, and I do
have these 2 processes running:

ehmsas.exe (Media Center Media Status Aggregator Service)
ehtray.exe (Media Center Tray Applet)

Despite the fact that ehtray.exe is running, I do not have any tray icon
showing media center.

Thanks for your help,
Mark

Open the Command Prompt with administrative privileges and run this
command in the cmd prompt: sfc /scannow

Okay, it seems my ehshell.dll may be corrupt somehow... Here are the
results of the scan:

C:\Users\Mark>sfc /scannow

Beginning system scan. This process will take some time.

Beginning verification phase of system scan.
Verification 100% complete.
Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some
of them.
Details are included in the CBS.Log windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. For example
C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log

and if I go look in that log file, it is quite long, but I believe the

I did some other reading, and to try and fix this I uninstalled KB950126.
After doing this, I can now start Media Center again. Yeah!

Thanks,
Mark

I have a similar problem. When I double-click the shortcut, I get an error
message that says "the application failed to initialize properly (0x000007b).
Click OK to terminate the application". Also, every so often I get a pop-up
dialog with the message "Media Center Scheduler Service has encountered a
problem and needs to close. Sorry (?) for the inconvenience. For more info
click here". I click and a new dialog with the following info pops up:
azAppName: ehSched.exe azAppVer: 5.1.2710.2732 szModName: ehSched.exe
szModVer: 5.1.2710.2732 offset:0001820c"
I tried sfc /scannow but I get no log file anywhere with the name CBS.
I checked Control Panel Scheduled tasks but it empty.
I am running Windows XP SP2 Media Center Edition
Thank you very much for your attention

We are going to need more explanation than "i kind of have the same
problem".

The same as what problem? Since you clipped the previous message, there is
no way to tell to what problem you are referring.

What version of MC (XP/Vista/7)?

Some basic system specs would help.

Has it every worked or is this a new install?

If it did work, what has changed, been installed, updated, etc. since it
worked?

If it did work, have you tried using System Restore to return to previous
time when it did work?

I seem to have the same problem as well. I have a dual core HP Pavilion
desktop, 2.13 Mhz, 2 gig RAM, Media Center 2002 Service Pack 3. When I open
the media center and chose "tv", it is unable to initialize, saying that some
files may be missing or corrupted. Everything else on the computer seems to
be working fine, but I have Nero which is also able to record and play back
video and that too is not working, so it must be something in the video setup.

When I go into TV, then recorded TV, I get the warning message that some
files may be missing or corrupt. When I go into Live TV, the program crashes
and hangs there until I do control-alt-del. BTW, the only disks I have are
the recovery disks from HP and I don't want to have to reinstall everything
yet again. Thanks! (I did ask HP, but no answer after a couple of days.)
