I had a similar problem and occasionally got the error message "2203" which
means that a critical file is missing (of course, I was getting the same
error message on 3 different machines with clean Vista installations...).
Eventually on one random installation of MDCD 6.1 an "unknown device driver"
was installed and the installation program worked. I haven't been able to
track down what device driver was installed, however.

I am having a similar problem. I get through installation and no errors. I
get the unknown device message, but it still won't sync. I have the phone
connected via Verizon so windows recognizes the phone, but WMDC does not.
Any ideas?
