Hello and thanks in advance for your help. I just want to view VHS tapes for
school on my dell xps laptop, have a tv tuner card and a simple vhs player
with s-video and other outputs. Am running xp media center and my system is
set up for gaming. Simpler is better for me. Thanks again.

You can do one of two things...you can set up Media Center to use the
composite/svideo input, or you can set it up to use the normal TV channels
and send the VCR in on channel 3/4. I've found I get a better signal using
the RF cable on channel 3 than a composite cable.

How can I setup Media Center to use svideo input? I have been searching for
a way to do this for a while and I can't seem to figure it out. The closest
I get is when I tell it I am using satellite or cable and choose the svideo
input as the signal source. But, it then says that it can't find an IR
device. It refuses to let me past this step until I attach some IR device.
I have no IR device. How can I set up windows media center to use svideo
input?

You can't without a MC compatible IR device and remote.
