When I open Media Center I get a message saying "*You video card or
drivers are not compatable with media * I click OK but the program
opens. Everything seems OK until I go to Videos and try to play one -
get a message: *"video error files needed to display video are not
installed or not working correctly. Please restart media center and/ or
the computer"*.

My computer is an HP pavilion with XP MCE 2005. I went to the HP
website and found an Nvidia GeForce 6150 LE display adapter update.
Downloaded it, did no good. Then I found an NVIDIA Chipset driver
update which is what the PC has. I downloaded it, but then it asked me
to use the Device Manager to install it and told me to choose the device
I wanted the driver update for -- I had no clue so I closed it down.

Do you think the Chipset drivers would help? If so can you give me
some steps to get it installed. Or if you have any other ideas for me?
I need pretty clear cut instructions as the technical jargon is foreign
to me.

Thanks very much for any help.

The error you are seeing has nothing to do with your Nvidia graphics/video
output card it is referring to a problem with either your TV tuner/video
capture card or to the DVD decoder software you have installed to decode and
play the input from your tuner/capture card. If you can play a DVD in MC
then it is a tuner card/driver problem. If not it is a MC compatible DVD
decoder problem.

Thanks for the input. I tried to play a DVD using Media Center and
nothing happened. It did play using an HP DVD player.
Don't know if this is useful, but I do notice that under Videos, only
the samples are showing up in the menu (though they won't play), my
other folders are there but registering as empty.

So from your response, I guess I have a problem with decoder driver
compatibility?

Could I find another driver to download somewhere? Any suggestions?

Use the following utility to insure that you have a MC compatible decoder
installed and selected as the preferred decoder.

OK - the decoder utility says that I have Cyberlink Video/SP Decoder
v6.0. It has a green check-mark under Media Center compatibility and it
says that it is selected as preferred.

Now what??

Update: After an extensive internet search on other posts with similar
problems, I figured out what my problem was. I wanted to post it here
to close out this thread and to leave the info for others.

I had been unable to get a Scrabble game to work. To "fix" that, I
turned down the graphics accelerator. Doing that got the Scrabble to
play, but also created the error message in Media Center. When I undid
that change, Media Center stopped giving me incompatibility error
message.

So, the bottom line: Scrabble scrambles Media Center? :o)
