do you know what the native resolution of the TV is? 1280 x 720? or
? that's what you should use (at least for now) for trouble
shooting.
On Tue, 21 Aug 2007 06:36:00 -0700, theelite
The TV is a rear projection so no native resolution, but just to check to
see if it was the tv, I hooked it up to a 22" HDCP widescreen LCD and the
same thing happened at its native resolution 1680x1050...everything tuned
fine but some HD channels and all the premiums. So I've ruled out the
display as the culprit.
you said you tried multiple cable cards. if you move them to another
device (or swap to the other tuner) this can break the pairing. you
need to start with two cable cards that Comcast has paired for you
and as sent a hit and init. What state do you live in?
I've double checked the pairing info with comcast with what they have in the
computer and it is correct for both cards. They also confirm that the hits
are reaching the cards.
I can tune all the network HD channels just fine, ABC, FOX, NBC, CBS...even
TNTHD, MTVHD...but some channels like Discovery HD, UHD, ESPNHD I can't
receive as well as all premiums. Both tuners are exhibiting the same
symptoms.
I am in New Jersey. To even get comcast to come here I had to tell them it
was for a Tivo3, they were refusing to install at first saying they don't
support cablecard PC's (even though it's stated on their webpage they do). I
had a tech come here twice, who basically just phoned in the info and when we
couldn't get it to work, gave up and left.
1. check what the bitrate of stream coming from the device is.
2. open device pages (Network -> ATI TV Wonder), click on Card link to open
CableCard tab, then click on all links at the bottom of the page (CableCard
applications) one by one and post what you see on those pages.

During channel change video is sent out unencrypted for a short while. Then

We shall see today.
I actually just tried reinstalling windows and did a totally new setup, same
exact thing happens. Curbnoise's symptoms actually sound similar, eventually
if you leave it on the channel it will go to a tuner not found screen after a
minute. Keep in mind this isn't just premiums but channels such as
UHD,DiscoveryHD,ESPNHD.
Not evey single time when you go to a premium it will tune for a few
seconds, sometimes it doesn't do anything at all but just black.
Bingo!
My problems to a tee (including intermittent loss of non-premium HD channels.
In general, when I have the tuner not found problem, if I physically remove
the CableCard, wait a minute, replace the CableCard, wait several minutes, I
will at a minimum get the tuner back. Almost never brings back the premiums.
My guess is that I am right on the cusp of signal strength level to make the
DCT happy. If all atmospheric, solar, lunar and karmic conditions are
aligned, the CableCard gets a big dose of happy and decides to work. If not,
well....
How did you come by the -12 dBmv number? I have been trying to research
what an "acceptable" number is for months.

MISSING_PROGRAM_REKEY is an indication that CableCard has not been activated
by the cable operator. The HIT that Comcast claims they sent either was not
really sent or it was lost in transition.
OP has two devices. One of them is paired and appears to be functioning
alright. While the second one is even NOT activated, left alone CA paired
and CP paired (this is something that will happen automatically after the
card is activated).
The problem is that Vista picks OCUR at its own discretion. If one device
that Media Center happens to pick isn't happy with the card then what you
get is no video.
Two logs that OP posted to this thread were collected from two different
devices (see card/host ID below).
This is what should be done IMO.
1. Connect OCUR that shows the data below on CableCard page (this is good
device). Disconnect the other one.
> CableCARD(tm): 000-299-163-873-1
> Host: 033-000-014-362-9
Go through the first run in Media Center and see if you can watch all
programs that you are authorized to watch. It should work.
2. Then flip devices. Disconnect first OCUR and connect the device that
shows this data on its CableCard page (this is bad device).
> CableCARD(tm): 000-299-155-822-8
> Host: 033-000-012-543-6
Make sure that it shows the problem with Media Center (it will). Then call
Comcast and have them send the HIT again for this particular device. Don't
touch the working one (assuming that it works).

And too true about MCE deciding what will be the "default" tuner. One of my
OCUR boxes was getting flaky and, of course, that was the "preferred tuner"
for Live and Recorded TV.
There was a tool for MCE 2005 that would allow you to change this, not sure
if it would work in Vista. Or if not, if the Registry settings are the
same. Will have to look into it.

Now if you could only define what "do not work" means...
Is it the same 2-sec-of-video-and-then-nothing for all broken channels?
What puzzles me is 2 MBit/s bit rate on HD channels. That obviously is not
good. Bit rate on HD should be at around 15 MBit/s or even higher. 2 MBit/s
is typical for low quality SD.
Do you have any special security software installed? Any additional
firewall, A/V software?

The HD channels that don't work exhibit the same symptoms as the Premiums
that don't work..a few seconds of video then freeze.
To check the bit rate, I am going to digital cable tuner diagnostics in
media center and going to the "out of band" menu...it always says
2048kbps..is there some other place I can look?
No, that's different bit rate. That one is a parameter of an out of band
tuner that the CableCard uses to receive data from the headend (secondary
tuner that is present on OCUR device solely for the purpose of servicing the
CableCard).
What I was interested in was a bit rate of the data that is flowing on the
IP network connection that is created for OCUR device.
Do right-mouse click on the task bar and select Task Manager from popup
menu. Select Networking tab. There you will see two or more graphs - one per
network connection as well as current bit rate in the list at the bottom.
Find the one that is for OCUR network and watch what is happening on that
network while you switch between channels that work and those that don't.
Also contact me offline at mpaklin AT hotmail DOT com. I'd like to ask you
to run an advanced test if you don't mind.
Thanks,

I have generally been able to work around the problem on the second
tuner by unplugging the cable card from the first tuner and turning
the computer off and on until the second tuner works. Once proper
operation on the second tuner is verified, then I replug the cable
card into the first tuner and then the system works fine until the
next power cycle or the next media center "security updat blue screen"
after which I usually need to go through the procedure again.
Both tuners have a SNR of about 24dB.
The first tuner has a signal level of 36 dB.
The second tuner has a signal level of -8 or -9 dB.
Swapping cables to the tuners does not affect the signal level on the
respective tuner.

Can you tell if I'm having the same issue? I frewuently lose premium
channels (HBO and showtime both SD and HD) after a reboot. Most of the time I
can solve the problem by repeatedly rebooting the computer until both tuners
can tune them. I'm currently having a problem with 1 of the tuners that no
amount of power cycling seems too be able to address. I have a Velocity Micro
Cinemagix S85 with two internal cable tuners I am on Comcast in San
Francisco.
Below are results from the problematic tuner while tuned to 730 (HBO HD). I
get the picture for a second then a message "No TV Signal"
message. I've got -9dBmV and an SNR of 24. Sometimes I just get a black
picture and then "No TV signal". I have the April 5th ATI firmware.

All of the above (and there is a lot more) makes you think twice before

I am fairly tech-savvy, but at is point I have reached the limits of both my

this very expensive paperweight back to Velocity Micro and accept defeat.
Any input would be GREATLY appreciated.
After calling in the new Cable Card and Host ID they indicated the pairing went through from their end. I just had to unplug and replug the USB and the ATI-DCT started receiving premium channels immediately.
Total visit time for the tech was about 10 minutes. Hope this helps anyone else with the same problem.

The TV is a rear projection so no native resolution, but just to check to

you said you tried multiple cable cards. if you move them to another
device (or swap to the other tuner) this can break the pairing. you
need to start with two cable cards that Comcast has paired for you

I've double checked the pairing info with comcast with what they have in the

I am in New Jersey. To even get comcast to come here I had to tell them it

support cablecard PC's (even though it's stated on their webpage they do). I
had a tech come here twice, who basically just phoned in the info and when we

exact thing happens. Curbnoise's symptoms actually sound similar, eventually
if you leave it on the channel it will go to a tuner not found screen after a

Not evey single time when you go to a premium it will tune for a few

In general, when I have the tuner not found problem, if I physically remove
the CableCard, wait a minute, replace the CableCard, wait several minutes, I
will at a minimum get the tuner back. Almost never brings back the premiums.
My guess is that I am right on the cusp of signal strength level to make the
DCT happy. If all atmospheric, solar, lunar and karmic conditions are
aligned, the CableCard gets a big dose of happy and decides to work. If not,

Yes, I was planning to elaborate. I just needed some time to crosscheck what
I think about it with certified authority on CableCards :-)
Go through the first run in Media Center and see if you can watch all
programs that you are authorized to watch. It should work.
2. Then flip devices. Disconnect first OCUR and connect the device that
shows this data on its CableCard page (this is bad device).
Make sure that it shows the problem with Media Center (it will). Then call
Comcast and have them send the HIT again for this particular device. Don't
touch the working one (assuming that it works).

And too true about MCE deciding what will be the "default" tuner. One of my

for Live and Recorded TV.
There was a tool for MCE 2005 that would allow you to change this, not sure
if it would work in Vista. Or if not, if the Registry settings are the
same. Will have to look into it.

OK, so this is the list of issues as I understand it:
1. Your premium channels don't work at all - HD or SD.
2. There are problems on 5 other (non-premium) SD channels.
3. None of HD channels work.

I'd like to ask you
to run an advanced test if you don't mind.

had COX cable come out and install two Scientific Atlantic cablecards in the
unit. I am unable to get ANY premium or HD channels on my WMC. I can get SD
channels fine.
I have installed the ATI TV Wonder Digital Cable Tuner firmware update
V1.16H and latest WMC update that is suppossed to fix known issues with SA
cablecards. Still, I have NO premium channels or HD channels.
I am fairly tech-savvy, but at is point I have reached the limits of both my
knowledge and my patience. I hoping someone here can help me before I send
this very expensive paperweight back to Velocity Micro and accept defeat.
Any input would be GREATLY appreciated.
