I upgraded my WLSync build, and now my Win7 machine has forgotten its
identity, thinking it's called OldName1. The options dialog won't let me
change this, so I tried changing the installName field in the settings file,
but that doesn't work. Is there any way I can get this machine to understand
that it's really OldName so I won't have to start over, potentially
re-syncing many gigs of stuff?

It looks like the new version of Live Sync (I was prompted to install it
this morning, but only on one of my computers) has the same broken computer
name problem that an older update also had. There's no known fix other than
deleting the computer that's now "dead" and re-linking all your libraries. I
know, it sucks. :-(

Odd.
I've got Live Sync installed on a variety of machines and none of them were
offered an update at all. What version do you see in Help/About, Jason?
14.0.8089.0726 is what I see on my Vista machine that just took several Windows
Updates within the last hour, rebooted, and reconnected to Live Sync.

Nope. Live Sync simply stopped working. The process went a little like this:

Install fresh Windows 7
Install Live Sync
everything working great
Install Live software suite to get Windows Live Mail
prompted to upgrade Live Sync
partnership terminated

Pretty frustrating.

That's the version I have right now - I'm not sure what version it was
before...would have been good to check!

When you installed Live Sync the first time where did you get the installer
from? The steps you descrbe seem to indicate that you installed the prior
version as the upgrade to the current version (a few months back) did exactly
what happened to you - complete loss of sync relationships and the requirement
to set it back up again after upgrade. I'm actually surprised that the first
install didn't immediately upgrade - that would seem to be an oversight by the
Live Sync team. If you used a saved installer, for example, it should have
upgraded you right away, I would think. If you pulled an old installer from the
download servers that was accidentally left deployed on a server in the farm,
I'd also expect that the first login would require you to upgrade. In either
case, it is certainly interesting. Is there a record of the install in the
Windows Event Logs perhaps?

I went to sync.live.com and downloaded it from here:

I spent a few minutes poking around the event logs and couldn't find it...

I just got the same error this morning. Except I never updated anything - not
sure what happened but LiveSync thinks my Computer is named Computer1, so
syncing has stopped working.

Is there a known fix for this yet?

Remove the listings for the old and "1" PC from the http://sync.live.com
management site, then uninstall and reinstall Live Sync on the PC.
For future reference, Live Sync help, support and community can be found at
