I am getting the error message:

WINDOWS LIVE SYNC SETUP:
A network error occured while attempting to read from file
C:\Kits\WindowsLiveSync[1].msi

I am logged on as administrator and there are no issues with the protection
on that directory.

Any ideas?

Is that a saved copy of the Live Sync installer and are you encountering the
error when trying to install? Have you tried installing by downloading and
selecting run instead of Save? Is the PC connected while installing?

OK, installing from the network avoided this problem. thanks,

However now, LiveSync starts and then immediately crashes. I have sent the
details along with the error handler that pops up and asks whether i want to
report this to Microsoft.

The followining is the exception information summary:
Code: 0xC0000005
Flag: 0x00000000
Record: 0x00000000
Address: 0x000004C5BAB

System Information
Windows NT 5.1 Build 2600

That error mean "access violation"
There's lots of information on that here -
http://www.updatexp.com/0xC0000005.html

Basically, it could mean a bad driver, faulty RAM, or (and I found this
interesting) a malware infection.
You may want to do a complete scan with an up to date antivirus product and,
depending on what you are using, also an antispyware product.
One scan option for you is the free online OneCare Safety Scanner -

The issue was the user account that i was using. I created a new account and
the problem went away. thanks for your help, Howard

Thanks for the follow-up. Add one to the list, then - corrupt user profile. ;-)

I ran into the same problem and did a bit of troubleshooting. In your user profile (I am running Windows 7), there is an AppData/Local/Microsoft folder. Just delete the Windows Live Sync folder and that fixes the problem as well. This effectively resets the cached user account information and when Live Sync is restarted, you just have to fill your login information in again.
