Hi everyone,
Yesterday I installed my Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit OS using the costum
install because I wanted to whipe clean my Dell Inspiron 1440 laptop. And
everything is working so far, except that I can't install the Windows Live
Messenger.

I've tried downloading the setup from download.live.com, microsoft.com, and
using the Windows Update, but it doesn't finish to install. I've watched and
attempted to run the Windows Live Setup about 6 times. And it's always the
same thing. At around 98% it's installing the Windows Live Call, and when it
reaches 100% it rolls back.

I also tried downloading the Msn Messenger 7.0 and attempting to update the
software. For the record, I can't even use the Msn Messenger 7.0 because it
says that I need to update it. And I can't update it because apparently I'm
not connected to the .NET Messenger Service. I tried testing the connection
and it didn't work because of an invalid character script error. After that,
I checked the Advanced Settings and ran the tests; my TCP and HTTP Proxy
Connection is working.

I'm currently using Kaspersky Internet Security and I even checked to see if
the firewall was blocking it, but the Windows Live Setup is treated as a
trusted software. I even attempted to turn off my firewall to see if it made
a difference. No luck so far.

The error says:
Check to be sure you are connected to the Internet. You cannot download
Windows Live programs unless you're connected to the Internet. hr:0x8104000d

I honestly don't get it. I'm currently connected by LAN with an ethernet
cable, but I also tried unplugging it and connecting to the internet using
WAN.

The only possible cause of this problem that comes to mind is that I had to
uninstall the Dell Wireless WLAN Card Utility before I could uninstall
Windows 7. But I already ran all Windows Updates. Not that it made any
difference since I was already connected to the internet.

Any ideas on how to fix it?

Greetings,

There is a setup log which would would probably give you the exact problem.

If you're not interested in that, you can just re-install the MSIs manually yourself. On
Windows 7, you only have to install two of them for Messenger:

Well, umm what can I say...

I really hope that you didn't actually expect me to download two unknown
files from a website that has absolutely no relationship to Microsoft for
absolutely no reason.

Neither answer helped.

However, I actually solved the problem. It appears that Kaspersky was
blocking the connection because I had set up my file and web antivirus for
the highest security level. Once I switched them both to default and added
the following links to the listed of trusted web addresses:
http://*.update.microsoft.com
http://download.windowsupdate.com
https://*.update.microsoft.com
the setup ran perfectly.

The information fixing my connection problem came from a Windows Update
Error Code 80040006.

Thank you! No one else had any useful information but just setting kaspersky
to default settings fixed the problem :)
