Does anyone know of a way to get out of this ridiculous circular situtation
where I can change the password, but then again do not know what it is?

Iirc, the alternate email address can not be the same email address used to create the Live ID for a Hotmail (hotmail.com,
live.com, msn.com) or registering a third party(non Hotmail) email address.
The option to add an alternate email address is present when creating a Live ID, though iirc it is not mandatory and can be
bypassed by:
a. Not entering one
b. Choosing the 'Secret Question' option

Which begs the question, if you have an alternative non live/hotmail
address why are you bothering with hotmail?

remember the darn question

Many folks have multiple email addresses in use for a variety of reasons. The provider and how many chosen is their choice, not
mine or yours.
<qp>
When you sign up for a Windows Live ID (The e-mail address and password that you use to sign in to Windows Live programs and
services such as Windows Live Hotmail and Windows Live Messenger; Microsoft services such as Xbox LIVE, MSN, and Office Live; and
anywhere else that you see the Windows Live ID logo.) , you aren't required to add an alternate e-mail address (An alternate e-mail
address is a secondary e-mail address registered with your Windows Live ID. If you forget your password, you can have the password
reset information sent to your alternate e-mail address.) , but we recommend that you do. If you forget your password, your
alternate e-mail address can be used to reset your password. You must be able to access the e-mail address that you provide without
signing in to Windows Live ID sites and services.
