Hello

I have a problem with my windows live mail. I have my contacts in the
windows contacts folder, but they aren't show in live mail? How can I sync
both folders? I don't want to administer both contact folders.

Best regards
André B.

Each WLM account has its own unique Contacts and used when signed on to WLM with a Live ID.

Hi

I don't really use Windows Live. I've only installed Windows Live Mail and I
manage my contacts with the integrated windows folder. I have anywhere read,
that you can select an option in windows live messenger to sync both contact
folders, but I have no idea, where it is? And I don't want to have only
contacts with an live-account in my address book.

Best regards
André B.

I am not aware of any method to automatically sync WLM contacts
and Vista's Windows contacts. However, from within WLM Contacts
you can manually import Windows contacts. You can also export
WLM contacts, and then import them into Windows Contacts.

Hi

Thank you for your answer. I hope, Microsoft will fix this problem soon,
because in my opinion it's strange, that the official mail program of
microsoft doesn't work with their allready installed contact programm in
vista. If someone still know any solution for my problem, it would be very
helpful for me.

Best regards
André B.

Vista's official mail program at the time is Windows Mail[WM]which shares the Vista Contacts.
Windows Live Mail[WLM] is an "optional" program which uses its own contacts(unique to each Live Id) or user a created default
Contacts(not the WM/Vista shared contacts) when a Live ID is not used for sign-on.

The solution available at this time was provided by Gary M.
- Export the contacts as a csv file and import in to the other client. If contacts are modified repeat the process in the
appropriate export/import direction.

I also want to syncronize contacts between my Hotmail and Windows Vista, I
normally use Windows live mail but as Vista had its own mail software I
decided to try and use that instead and have my hotmail contacts accessable
though Windows Contacts.
I entered my e-mail address in Windows mail setup and got the following
message:
"Windows Mail no longer suppors the HTTP servers used by Hotmail and other
web-based e-mail providers. Click the back button to set up a different
e-mail account or see other options for accessing your web-bassed email"
So there you go, Miscrosoft Vista mail doesn't support Microsoft Hotmail and
therefore forces you to use windows live mail software that doesn't support
Windows Vistas contacts.
Well done Microsoft, you thought long and hard about this I can tell

Windows Mail cannot access Hotmail accounts.
Windows Live Mail can access Hotmail accounts. It can import all your
messages and contacts from Windows Mail. Just use WLM instead of WM.
There is no provision for sharing the same set of contacts between WM and
WLM.

Yes but that still doesn't help me with the problem of Windows live mail
contacts and Vista contacts not talking to each other.
Every time a friend of mine logs on to live messenger, or I receive an
e-mail from a friend, windows tells me that he/she isnt a contact because
vistas contacts doesnt have them in, even though that person has been a
messenger buddy for years and I have their e-mail in my hotmail account.
I dont want to have to constantly keep manually updating windows contacts
just because it wont talk to hotmail.

Once you switch to WLM, there should be no need to have any
further interaction with Vista's Windows Contacts.
It sounds like you don't have all your protocol defaults set up properly.

Ok so if I set up my protocol defaults properly, this will stop msn messenger
telling me my contacts are not in my contact list?
That would be great, so where do I find these protocols and how do I set
them up properly?

Go to Default Programs, "Associate a file type or protocol..." , scroll
down to the bottom of that screen.
I don't use Messenger, so I have no clue what special settings it needs.
You may want to seek out the Messenger experts:
microsoft.public.msn.messenger
microsoft.public.windows.live.messenger

Msn Messenger was renamed Windows Live Messenger in 2006. Windows Live Messenger replaced that version in 2007 with the release of
Windows Live Messenger 2008.

Possible partial solution here:
http://windowsvistablog.com/blogs/windowsexperience/archive/2007/05/13/making-your-windows-live-contacts-work-with-windows-contacts.aspx

"ll you need to do is log on to Windows Live Messenger. Go to "Options" and then
click on "Security". There you will see an option to "Encrypt contact list data
so that it is not accessible outside Windows Live Messenger". Uncheck it. You
will probably need to log off and log back in.

Under Windows Contacts in Windows Vista, a new folder will appear under the name
of the email address of your Windows Live ID you use to sign-in to Windows Live
Messenger. So if you use joh...@hotmail.com as your Windows Live ID - a folder
called "joh...@hotmail.com" will appear. Within that folder, your contacts from
Windows Live will appear and the data for those contacts will be filled in. If
you are getting automatic updates from many of your contacts, that information
will be synced up into Windows Contacts from Windows Live Messenger. You might
get contacts listed as "Name missing". That means their name has not been
entered under their contact information and you can go into Windows Live
Messenger and manually enter their name yourself to correct the problem."
